Numisrob and Numisma: Funny, but I found an 1861 English half penny in circulation in the US:   I was working at a gas station in rural Oklahoma when a customer paid with a bunch of change including this British half penny. I assume they were trying to pull a fast one over on me. The joke was on them. I accepted it as a quarter, as it is a bit larger than a quarter, and I paid a quarter for it. I just wonder what year it made it across the pond to the States and what is the story behind it. It's possible that it came to America via a soldier in World War I or II, or even before that. It was obviously in England for several years because of the heavy circulation that is evident. Coins like this one are cool because they have a story behind them. We will never know the story of these coins, but we can imagine and ponder how and why they ended up in my collection. Edited by bugo

Numisma: Already have it. I actually bought 2 copies because my cat bled on my original copy when he was so sick and I had to replace it with a spiral bound Red Book. It's a nice reference, but you can find most of the information online. |

I found paper money yet AGAIN, this time, it was a 5 dollar bill on the floor in one of my classrooms! And the real kicker was (pun intended) that some girl was kicking it across the floor, almost as if she didn't care! I picked it up as soon as she was gone, but still, who would pass on 5 bucks?

A few weeks back I was on my lunch break buying a new shirt and tie for a wedding (we didn't end up even attending), and I then grabbed a quick bite at Arby's in the mall...something I never do. Got this in my change. Kind of neat, I looked it up, maybe worth $5.  Ol' Thomas doesn't even seem to mind the big fat Cud staring him right in the face. I've never received one of these error coins in change before (to my knowledge). Edited by one_fine_dime

Thanks - I was very surprised...but then I was thinking, how rare is this to find in circulation? Maybe it is fairly rare.

Judging by the condition, which isn't that bad for a 44-year-old coin, it probably sat in a change jar or a drawer for most of that time before reentering circulation.

I went to my local B of A today to get some halves, and got almost shut down, again, but the teller offered me a 1977-D Ike. First one I have seen in the wild in many years.
