Dewayne76, the 1943 cent was so encrusted, it took a magnifying glass to read the date.

I'm thinking of dipping it in acetone in order to improve it, and then probably give it to one of the grandkids.

Glad I found it though. Reminded me of the "Old Days" when they showed up in my pockets all the time. And, they always seemd to look new and shiny.

I have never found a steel cent in circulation. About how many years ago was it when there was plenty still in circulation?

I was a "kid" growing up in the 1950's. I clearly remember having them in my pockets all the time.

I can remember asking my parents why they looked different, sort of like dimes. They told me about WWII, and why it was necessary to make pennies out of a different metal during the war.

Every night when I get home I empty all of my change into two banks. Pennies (cents) go into a 5 gallon jug and the rest into a frog bank. Being half French Canadian I am used to being called a frog so I have adopted it as my symbol. I don't bother checking my change daily - I check it every two months.

Well, when I emptied my "frog" bank and found a 1948 S nickel in AU 50 or better and a 1996 Quarter - tilted partial collar strike - class III-M-3 which has a rarity level of 5-6 and a value of $20 up. The collar is visible on about half the perimeter of the coin and the reeds at the highest point cover about half of the edge - half the coin is broad struck having no collar at all. I noticed it because it was just slightly bigger than the rest of the stack.

I got a roll of 1937/1938 wheat pennies. Half and half that someone brought into the carryout. Also had another roll with late 50's and early 60s in it, and the last roll had all 68 d pennies in it. Also got another $2 bill.
