Hello all,
Here I am going to show you what I found today while going thru my dimes. I do not know if it is a new discovery but it is sure interesting to me. Here are my scans of (2) differnt 2006-P dimes one with close "AM" and the other with wide "AM". Please give me feed back on this to let me know if you all think it is a wide "AM".

Thank you,

300 coin guy

It would take an overlay to tell for sure whether they are actually separate designs or just a result of die wear or polishing. I could conduct the overlay, but I would have to have examples in hand to photograph.

HMM...Interesting. As Charles says, It could be die wear.

If the normal die has a slight separation between the A and the M, as the die wears, the lettering would spread out a little due to the constant hammering of the die. As the letters spread out a little, the A and the M may appear to be closer.

It would be important to see if the coins show that they were struck with dies showing differing degrees of wear or if the dies are indeed different.

There's enough there to make looking into it something that you definitely want to do.

In the meantime, I'm gonna check some dimes that I have here to see if I can see anything helpful.

Thinking about this from the opposite end of it. It is also possible for the A and M to be touching and for a die to be polished causing a slight separation between the A and the M.

I might suggest looking for extra die polishing lines in the area of the A and the M on the coin with the space.

Thanks,
Bill

As far as I know it would be a new discovery, and as to value, we would need to know how it came to be and how common or scarce it is before assuming value.

C.D. Daughtrey,

Would you please e-mail me with you home address and I will send the dimes to you so you could look at them. Then if you wanted you could do the overlay to see how it all came about. Then if you wanted you could get Bill's address then send off the coins to him. Please let me know what you would want to do. I would be more than happy to send them to you to study.

Thank you very much.

My thoughts would be to send them to Charles first. I've seen his close up photowork and he seems to have equipment that is one notch above mine.

I have great programs and a decent macro capability but I suspect, If Charles is agreeable, he would be able to get better shots of the coins.
