Hey everyone, This is my first post and wanted to get as much information as I can about this coin. I am looking at a graded piece by PCGS graded PR65CAM 1967 $20 Gold struck on a 50c planchet, the coin is in a 2 coin slab along with the real gold piece also graded PR68CAM I would really appreciate any insight the community has about this 2 coin slab pair. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...09_image.jpg[/ I know your asking for more pics but I am more interested in what everyone knows about this coin or any history about it then condition or anything like that, I know the population on the gold piece is only 10 with PCGS, but here is another pic, I don't like to show serial numbers of coins I don't own so I cropped that out. The owner is asking a great deal for the 2 coins and I just want more info before I consider making a offer. Thanks again :) Edited by Double66s 11/11/2014 11:41 pm

Pacific is right... and sharp detailed close ups have never seen a 2-coin slab. this gold coin on silver bothers me. HOW is that possible in the world of minting gold coins? I assume some Hanky-Panky at the mint?

I once spoke with Sandy Campbell about this coin. Unlike other 'hanky-panky' strikes form 1967 (e.g., double and triple struck 1967 dollars and 50c, and diving/upside down geese), this coin is possibly a pattern or a trial strike, since the 20 dollar and nickel 50c have very similar diameters... others disagree, because the hardness (malleability) between the two different planchets os vastly different, and so the jury is still out on this one... Cool as heck though, and if I collected 1967 strikes and errors, I would love this coin. Looks awesome in the double holder - I have a pair of nickel dollar errors in a double holder.

Whats the asking price?..the experts can let you know what you should expect to pay, ballpark figure. I dont know how many $20 gold coins where minted but just over 337,000 1967 black box sets containing the gold where minted.

Seller is asking for 10,000 but is open to offers. I know I can get the set for around 700 or so but I have no clue as to the value of these coins together in the high grades they are in.

I assume you mean 7000? At 700 this would be a no brainer. The values of high end "error" coins like these are pretty subjective. You might look at the sale of a quarter-on-sovereign that was sold at Heritage a year or so ago as a comparison. I think it went for around $5000 but I don't recall exactly. The one thing that might detract a little from this one is that it does not appeal to many standard "series" collectors as there is no $20 series. I don't know many 50 cent collectors would care as this really isn't a 50 cent error.

I am actually surprised that it is selling that cheap... the other 1967 patterns, the 10c and 25c struck on nickel planchets, of which up to 10 of each are known, sell for $4000 or so. I sold mine (25c bobcat Charlton DC-34) last year. The $20 gold alone, in PCGS PR-68, is worth about $1000, from recent Heritage auctions.
In my opinion, $10,000 is a deal, if you can get both of those coins for less, it is a steal.

He could be saying that he can get the black boxed 67 set (with the $20 gold for ~$700...)

Hey thanks you guys, really appreciate the information, one more question though, any idea on how many of these 50c planchets were struck?

No idea. Is that a question the seller might know?

I would imagine that four or less of these things exist... the one you are contemplating is the highest grade I have seen...
