Hello everyone. I am new here so please excuse me if I mess something up.
I purchased this 1887 Morgan about a year ago by accident. I actually was purchasing 3 Ike dollars and a gold plated Kennedy half. The lady threw in this Morgan and a 1925 Peace dollar. The Peace dollar is the shiniest Peace I have ever seen. She said it was taped inside the cover of her Grandmothers diary. Could you please tell me what you think the Morgan grades? It came in this bank holder. Thanks!

Jack

Hi Jack Head

Welcome to the forum !!!

!st let me make this disclaimer LOL, there are folks here who are much better with Morgans than I am !!!

It looks like an easy MS-64 and possibly a 65 ,Grading from a picture is a guess at best,, I would wait for more responses and form a general concensus!!
With this notation!!! the card Board in that holder is not being kind to that coin, you may want to consider a more appropriate holder for it !!!

Thanks Rick! I am no good at this grading thing. I am partial I guess and probably would grade on the high side...HAHA! I do not own any graded coins. Too many choices and too many prices out of reach. I buy coins for their price, history, rarity, and looks. Probably as most people do, but I love the stories coins tell us.

Hi Jack. The coin appears to be uncirculated, but without larger pics, I cannot be more detailed. From what I can see, it looks like a good strike, but the finer MS grading requires being able to see a lot of additional detail in the fields and design. Does this coin have complete cartwheel luster? You can check this by tilting the coin in the light. You will see what I mean right away.

Scanners are great for detail, but will not pick up luster. By the way, I like the perimeter toning. I've always been a little partial to that golden tone.

Hello Susan, thanks again for all your help. Yes I believe it does have the "cartwheel" luster. The light spins around the coins luster. Looks pretty cool. I have never noticed that before. Very nice!

If the luster is good and stray marks are minimal, I could see it as an MS63. For grades over that, I'd need to see much larger pics.

They did not store on the host site as big as I had hoped. I have them as a 10"x10" on my hard drive if you would like to see them.

I got the pics and I'm posting them here for everyone to see:

1887-Morgan-In-Bank-Holder

1887-Morgan-In-Bank-Holder

I see slight rub on the higher points. This is how I interpret the darker areas on the cap and on the breast feathers on the reverse. There are very few bag/contact marks. I see this coin as AU58.

I see, the plastic holder it sits in does rub on the coin in those areas. I need to place it in an Air Tight type holder. I need to figure out how you put the pictures in here. Thank you again for all your help. You are GREAT!

As long as you have a place to host your pics, you just need to paste the url for the pic in the post, highlight it, and click on the image icon in the format line in the reply box. This is the yellow square above the "Color" selection box.

Hmmm, Susan we are not usually this far apart on grades?

With the larger pics I will compromise LOL MS-63 But only because I dont think it is wear on the cap and I think it is toning on the breast, it appears I can see the breast feather detail behind it .

Hi, with the enlarged photo's I would say the coin is an MS63. I do not see the rub and agree that it appears more as toning. The cheek is clean, hair is complete, leading edge of wings and both claws are solid and the breast feathers show typical marks from bag storage. I would however rescue this coin from the current holder as the toning is getting very dark and actually damaging the coin, another reason I see it as a 63. Nice gift from a bank! Mike

It is probably my best Morgan. I got it from a lady that I purchased some Ike dollars and 24k plated Kennedy half on ebay. She threw in this Morgan, a 1925 Peace, 1 Susan B, and 1 Sacagawea's, and 5 more Kennedy Halfs. All for $9.00 and $4.00 for shipping. Not Bad huh?

Okay, I've looked again and have decided that what I'm seeing is not wear. I concur with everyone here at MS63.
