I think this is one of the best medals I have seen. I have to get one for myself and have a lead on one! The detail is incredible. It was commissioned for the 1864 completion of the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul in Philadelphia and was engraved by Anthony C. Paquet. Details can be found here about the medal: http://numismatics.org/collection/1940.100.1431Additional information about Paquet can be found here for those interested in learning something new: http://uspatterns.com/anthonycpaquet.html

Very nice. Is that the actual color on the medal?

Congratulations! That is a beautiful medal with a great provenance. One of the reasons I've started collecting medals is because of pieces like your's. This piece reminds me of the medals of the Wiener series.

Thanks for sharing this with us. When I clicked on the REV pic to see the larger version I found myself studying it like I would a pic of the actual inside of a cathedral or palace room. The detail is stunning. Very beautiful.

What is the size/weight of that medal? Judging by the rim, it looks heavy, and perhaps it had been dropped a few times? Very cool that you have the box with it... are you going to hunt for the bronze one as well? We are collectors, after all...
