Forgot to say, that if it is ELDS then the serrations on the edge should still be sharp as they are produced by the collar not the die. If the edges are grainy like that then it is something else. Perhaps acid. Take some calipers and measure it.

Looks like acid. What does the edge look like? Most of the time the copper will be eaten away.

The edge will tell the story for this one.

All the black makes me think it was in a fire.

I'd have guessed blowtorch / fire damage, rather than acid.

If it is acid, the edge may show more shrinking on the copper layer. But it did not look like that when it was struck. PSD

With lots of heat, copper nickel coins tend to go black.
In this case, I would suggest fire and ashes damage.

I have heated an uncirculated copper nickel coin to red heat, with no damage at all to the fine detail on the coin. The coin itself turned out VERY black.

This one is more silvery in appearance, and so it was probably cleaned up after heat exposure.

Sometimes they are hit with a wire brush or dremel tool and messes with the surface. But still PSD.

The edge does not look like acid damage so must be a heat source of some kind.
