Just picked this one up at the LCS and found it to be very interesting. It's hard to depict, but there "appear" to be the remnants of a "C" associated with the "O" mintmark. I only see one "C" and not two. The "C" is difficult to capture, but the bits of metal residue (to me) seem to be a "C". I give the Morgan an AU (Details - cleaned). Thoughts? Opinions? PG

It is probably one of the O over CC varieties. There were several dies used that had been reworked. Some showed evidence of the prior mint Mark, some don't. Some show just parts of the old mintmark.

Maybe one of the VAM experts will show up and comment.

I'm not seeing it. All of the O/CC varieties are fairly strong, and would show up plainly on an AU coin.

I'll have to agree with messydesk.... I don't see it either.
I went digging though the VAM book to see the examples of where the CC's could be positioned, but still couldn't find them from the photos you provided.
Sorry.

I guess my eyes are trained to actually see stuff like this. It is one of my weaknesses. The mint mark placement and "c" are very similar in location to the VAM-9. While I am not saying your coin is a VAM-9, this is offered as a way to steer others into possibly seeing what you and I see.

Unfortunately, I don't think just the presence of a phantom "c" will ever convince anyone. From my experience, chasing this will lead to a dead end.

That being said, if it was my coin, I would search the reverse for other die markers (die poop if you will), and go to the Heritage archives and see if you can match up the die markers to a 93-cc or even a 92-cc reverse die.

Likely a futile exercise, but finding a new o/cc reverse die would be exciting. Might make for a way to kill some time on a cold winter weekend.

By the way, your last photo is where I see the Phantom "c".

Is it just me, or should we maybe be looking at Slanted Date VAMs for this one? I see something in the R of PLURIBUS...
