This one is real obvious. It looks like a child drew the date on there. Numbers are way too big and not straight and bolder than the rest of the coin. Also, last feather points to 'CA' and not the correct 'IC'. Unfortunately it'll probably sell for $500+

I contacted the seller and told them this coin is a counterfeit and why. Now it is wait and see if they pull it off ebay or not.

Jewelry and many pawn stores that buy gold, silver and coins typically have little to no knowledge of coins other than metal content or values in a Red Book so they are easy prey for someone to sell a counterfeit coin to. More often than not if you let them know their coin is not genuine and why they will do the right thing and remove the coin from ebay.

Based on Snow's guide it's definitely NOT one of the major varieties.
The date is too widely spaced.

ebay don't care what it is just as long as the fees get paid and the Buyer is happy.

I've bought from this seller before and gave them a kindly warning. They have some days left, and I expect that they'll terminate the listing upon confirming the piece a fake. They have excellent feedback, and their expertise is more with jewelry than coins, methinks.

Gotta love a type 2 design on an 1872 coin.

As I posted earlier, he's an honest seller and just needed some time to confirm the fake. He's principally a jeweler. I refrained from reporting this one, as I guessed he'd have someone study the piece and consequently pull it. Sadly, these fakes are increasingly fooling many legitimate sellers.

I'm glad they pulled it. This ebay store is located at the same address as a major coin dealer in the Cincinnati area. I've done business at their retail store a few times and have always been happy. Not my favorite shop in the area but they do have an extensive inventory.
