I just bought one of these sets, to rip the holiday loon dollar out for my raw collection of loons.

Did anyone notice that the 2-dollar coin and loon dollar within this set are lacquered? I left my loon dollar intact (for my collection), and the 5-cent, 10-cent and 25-cent were not lacquered, but the $2 was heavily lacquered, right from the RCM, and took a decent solvent soak to remove it.

I suppose the RCM has recognized how quickly the new plated $1 and $2 coins turn colour, and want to preserve that lustre...

I did not get the Holiday Set but do have two other sets from this year,
Without breaking into the set, is there a way to tell if they are lacquered
through the blister pack? Are they sticky/tacky? Bubbles, different tone?

Not sure I like the idea of the mint doing damage at the mint. Just MD not PMD.
Coins should be distributed as struck, I'm kind of a purist.

I also noticed this lacquer on some of the proof coins. Very unnatural and distracting. The below image shows the difference between the 2006 (satin) and 2007 (glossy) lacquer.

Hi, does this happen to non-precious metal proof coins only, or did our Mint apply lacquer to silver proof coins as well?

I vaguely recalled seeing discussion about the Perth Mint applying some kind of coating to their early Kookaburra coins (those issued in 2x2 coin holder).

Is that what RCM is doing here?
