Hello all,
This is one of my first posts here and I guess I'm cutting right to the chase; but I'm sure thats how most ppl like it...
Im researching and writing a paper on Coins of the Third Reich (surpirsingly having the working title Münzen des Drittes Reich, for you german speakers out there!)), and thus I'm looking for the local Third Reich coin expert!
The information I am currently looking for is listed below:
- Details of the 7 Mints of the period that were minting coins (I have some very basic information, but seek more) - Histories and the Fates of the Mints (for example, The Hamburg Mint stopped producing in 1943 after being struck in air raids) - Production techniques used (the machines, the procedures, etc) - Images/Photos of the Mints from the period - Production quotas and outputs - System of Control and Regulatory body that controlled production
- Details on the Coins produced: ( I have a modest amount of information, but am looking for more technical information) - Metallurgical Compositions, beyond the primary base metal (i.e., more than just '0.900 Silver' or 'Bronze-Al'; this will save me having to take a few coins to the Chemical Engineer Dept, who'll probably have to destroy them during analysis!) - Coin Designers - Who designed these things? - Coin recall details (how many coins were recalled in 1939/40 and what percentage remained in circulation, Ive recently found some documents that show that certain coins were minted to stockpile materials 'in plain sight', etc) - Proposed Coins (I believe a few commemorative coins were designed and prototyped, but not produced in period 1939-1945. One of these is a commemorative Reichsmarks coin with Adolf Hitler on one side and the Brandenburg gate on the other. Another is the RUMOURED production of a 1939 1RM with the updated Reichsadler (with Swastika) - Not sure I beleive that one tho!)
That'll do for a start! ;)

Yes, I have all those GPS co-ords for the 5 current German mints... You wouldnt have to know where Muldenhutten Mint (Third Reich - E Mintmark) is? Its somewhere near Dresden; I cant find co-ords...
And, for your list, you may want to include The Austrian National Mint (Wien) at 48.203515N 16.38253E. Was used from 1938 to 1944 to mint Deutsches Reich Currency... After liberation, went back to minting the Austrian Schilling, followed by the Euro..

Don't know that much about Third Reich coins (those who focus on them are usually in the US, UK, etc., so you may get more responses from there) but you may want to change that to "Münzen des Dritten Reichs". Genitive singular, y'know. Muldenhütten was the location of the Saxonian mint from 1887 until 1953. The place is part of Hilbersdorf, a suburb of Freiberg. http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=50.9...56,13.384722Christian

Christian, thank you!
Do you have any more information on the Mint? Particularly 1933-1945? Including more pictures?
On that note, do you have more information about ANY of the Mints?

Most of the information that I could provide is from the Jaeger catalog which, as I read elsewhere, will soon be in your hands anyway. It does have quite a bit of information on the designers, mintages, composition, etc. Don't have any pictures of (former or existing) mints, sorry. For the mints that are still operating today, you can of course contact them directly; Muldenhütten may be more difficult. Since it was also used as a production facility in the early GDR years, the Berlin Mint (which made GDR coins until 1990) may have some more info: http://www.muenze-berlin.de/Another option in Berlin is the Münzkabinett, part of the Berlin Museums group: http://www.smb.museum/ikmk/ It has an extensive collection much of which is available online. You could also try and contact the local history club in Freiberg too: http://www.freiberger-altertumsverein.de/(Edit - Direct link to a coin in the Münzkabinett removed; maybe that was some kind of dynamic link.)Christian
