It's that particular 1/1 that is the premium one due to it's significant offset and the underlying 1 looking to be smaller. They are scarce and particularly so in choice collecting grade which is why this one sold so high. Other 1/1's or 5/5's with minimal offset are no different than minor re-punched 9's, they might carry a bit of a premium or not.

When I saw this example at the start..it jumped right out at me (many days back). Then the (now new owner) came in with a nice bid and I new it would be a battle for it.. I checked and saw the 2011 Charlton had a much lower grade example as their photo and thought that this would be a good one to go after. EF showed big money on it and AU showing crazy money also... It went crazy in that last hour and I went momentarily into "shock" ..as I wanted it also.. I had fun on that one..but didn't get it.. . .

Oh yes ...there are always surprises coming along and that's part of the fun.. ..but I can't wait to see the asking price for it on ebay.. I would have been very generous and would have asked at least $50,000 less that it's now going to go up for.. ..such a deal already.. I like the big prices in some of the ebay offerings ..gives a good laugh ..and adds some strength to the coin market.. . .

Well...It's the third large cent coin I listed without paying attention to detail until after it was listed. 1859 9/6 and an 1858 FV were the other two. Unless it constitutes a catastrophic financial error, I generally don't like to remove coins after they've been listed for auction. This one went well, the 1858, not so much.

Devlec, YOU got that one right.....I would guess his bid was over 500 when he bids he usually bids to buy. It will most likely come back in a ANACS holder in a few months.

I still would like to know why the surface was kind of rough looking from so many others that we daily see?
Didn't see that nice deep brown that we often expect to see on a nicely graded cent.. details,..details..
Maybe cleaned a bit..I don't know..? Nice sharp pics though..
I'm no expert here,..because I'm used to handling nice shiny ones...and the "dark side" of cent collecting is new to me..

Quote: much of the odd variety pricing in Charlton is derived by expert opinion and not by sale numbers looks like the experts just take the regular price and multiply by 10. Sorry, I'm a cynical person by nature and seeing the Charlton prices makes me chuckle.

I'm thinking he will re list it as Very Rare and ask 25.0000 for it time will tell. I thought the coin was EF-40

The coin doesn't appear recently cleaned, conserved or whizzed Develec. However, reality would dictate that a 150 year old coin in that grade has ben cleaned many times over it's lifetime. Copper "heals" pretty well over time. Silver also, just takes a few years longer.

With respect to Charleton pricing, I think the mainstream stuff is not far off trends (one might rightfully argue that trends is way off on some coins, and that they are). I think the more rare stuff in CHarleton is assigned pricing based on some assumptions based on other rarities. I also think that over the last few years the world has gotten smaller and more coins are available. This impacts pricing. The commonwealth was a big place and now you get to shop it (easily). I don't either Charlton or trends have kept up with that fact very well.
