I did look at the coin closely and was wondering what it is. I had some similar large cents some time ago where the 1 looked very similar. Sorry, I can not help here, but perhaps Zonad can. I think you might have a variety in the 9. Not sure. did the coin sell?

We originally thought the coin could have been a very weak 9 over 6 but after a closer look and a toothpick, we didn't think so.

The coin is not a 9/6. It would appear to be the 1859 listed in the 65th Charlton on pg 295. That is a distinctive 1/1. They are fairly scarce.

Indeed it looks like a re-punched 1 as Dan mentions. The coin did sell. We didn't feel it was appropriate to post it here while it was listed. We did not realize the variety until the coin was listed and we let it go. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1859-Canada-...2299752?rd=1

Very nice! It looks like by the number of bids that many noticed the variety. Perhaps you could have done better, but with such great pics, I'm sure everyone noticed.

I would say EF for this coin being a N9.

Daxxxx.. paid a lot for it. I see the fields a bit pebbly in that ebay pic. (and I don't understand that in a large cent)..and a few heavy reverse bag marks in and around the letters. It's a nice and higher grade example of the 1/1... .....and "do" I see a bit of a 9/9 in that example..? Very nice ,..all the same......... . .

The 1/1/ is not listed as usual variety in the Charlton like the DP9s. Is it just the 1 over 1 that has such a market? I have seen EF 5/5 not go close to this auction price either.
Can someone explain the lure to this particular coin besides being a sharp grade coin with no trace luster?

This variety books out at 200 in EF and 500 in AU. When I spoke to Bill some time ago, much of the odd variety pricing in Charlton is derived by expert opinion and not by sale numbers.

Hunter, which book are you using. I dont have all Charltons, is there one I should pick up with all the 1859 varieties? Is that for only the 1/1? Sorry for so many questions

If you scroll above in the thread it was mentioned by Dan. 65th Edition of Charlton, page 295.
