I don't really buy modern coins, but I'd pay a premium for the right coin if it's graded and eye appeal is to my liking, I could care less about the TPG grade or sticker some other party assigns to it. I learned though years of practice and study to grade coins myself, I feel I don't need a TPG or sticker company to tell me what grade a coin is. That said, I do like a certified coin when it comes to selling as many people can't nor are willing to take the time to grade a coin themselves. With certain key date coins the authentication does count, and gives some real guarantee backed in cash.
The fact that TPGs are so inconsistent with grading, that can be a good thing when one can use knowledge to score a coin at a grade lower than the coin really is, happens all the time.
