In another online forum (name withheld to protect the guilty) they are discussing the pros and cons of a new TPG who will sticker graded moderns. Including LMC, which CAC does not accept. The person heading up the new company is known to the members of the forum and is a respected numismatist. So, as I personally do not send coins for grades and stickers, I am interested in what group here thinks.
Would you pay a premium for a PF69 ‘stickered' Kennedy half?
Would you send your graded modern coins off to get a sticker?
Will this be a good thing?

Just having come across a stash of Kennedy Proofs, I honestly think it would be a valuable resource for collectors. The TPGs are VERY inconsistent imo with moderns. Look at the recent baseball coins! There are some PR69s out there that shouldn't grade 66, but they do.

The real answer is for the graders to spend more time grading coins and being more careful. But since we can't make that happen despite the costs involved, I guess I'd be alright with it. I probably wouldn't send many coins off. It's hard enough to get moderns graded with any expectation of real return.

I don't really buy modern coins, but I'd pay a premium for the right coin if it's graded and eye appeal is to my liking, I could care less about the TPG grade or sticker some other party assigns to it. I learned though years of practice and study to grade coins myself, I feel I don't need a TPG or sticker company to tell me what grade a coin is. That said, I do like a certified coin when it comes to selling as many people can't nor are willing to take the time to grade a coin themselves. With certain key date coins the authentication does count, and gives some real guarantee backed in cash.

The fact that TPGs are so inconsistent with grading, that can be a good thing when one can use knowledge to score a coin at a grade lower than the coin really is, happens all the time.

I am not really into moderns (unless it is an uncommon variety), but some people are. Surprisingly there are some rare moderns out there, especially early clad dimes (try finding a 1966 or 1967 ms68 with full bands!), quarters and nickels. I would not be surprised if there was some rare Lincoln memorials too.

Bottom line...why not? Let the collectors decide if the new TPG sticks around.

I'm not a fan of the CAC/WINGS/whatever this is concept, but I reluctantly acknowledge the necessity. Slabs make numismatics a ton more accessible to new collectors, helping them to acquire decent coins while devoping their skills. And the TPG's have plainly failed at consistency.
