Same here John. When I saw the title my mind settled on this anomaly right away. I'm a bit stymied by it. If a crack then I'd expect raised sharp ridges. I've seen 2 or 3 of these and none really 'felt' like a crack. Thought struck through a thread wire or something too. If just one then maybe a planchet problem but because of the common area it has to be die related I think. It's worth pursuing. Maybe Coop or Mike have an idea.
I am at a disadvantage of going just by your pics, but if I had to make a blind guess on your situation I would have said you have a spot of glue on your coin and soak it in acetone. Is the area in question raised or impressed into the coin?
It may have been a struck through a piece of plating? Note how the area in question looks like something was on the planchet when the coin was struck and the devices are weaker in that area.
