I had an interesting conversation with a guy that collects Navaho weavings and it actually relates to coin collecting. He stated when he first started collecting them, with minimal knowledge, he found a lot that he liked and the prices were reasonable. Once he started really learning about them, he discovered things like how much a tighter weave makes a difference in the quality (and price) and how "authentic" it is if it has a "spirit line". Now, armed with this knowledge, the his hobby got a lot more expensive and challenging.
I'm sure this relates to virtually any collecting hobby. Knowledge is king. Once you start understanding what you collect, you'll never view your collection the same again. Hence, what's not a problem coin to you today, will likely become one tomorrow. And, of course, finding those nice, original, eye-appealing, problem free coins is quite challenging and could be a bit more expensive.
