Just picked this up
Weak strike? wear?
Grade me please
How much does the carbon spot detract from the coin?
can it be removed?

Hi 7070,

Nice coin! I wish my '08-S were this good....

Both San Francisco IHC's often have strike weakness, especially at the tips of the headdress feathers and on the reverse ribbon. Your coin has what I think is typical weakness in these areas. I don't see any wear and there appears to be pretty good luster. There are some assorted fine hairlines and a few tiny nicks, but I don't see any evidence of harsh cleaning. The color looks original. I think it easily qualifies as RB and might possibly sneak into the RD (red) category.

My understanding is that carbon spots are due to impurities in the copper alloy and are part of the coin's surface. I don't think you could remove this one without causing damage.

The weakness and the prominent carbon spot will hold the grade back somewhat, but I see this as MS-62RB at minimum and possibly MS-63RD. I like it!
