Hello and merry Christmas to all.
I've been away from this forum for awhile. Just totally sick of collecting RCM's stuff.
I've been channeling all my resources into high grade, key dates silver dollars.
I have an opportunity to acquire this example.
Just need the experts here to give me their opinion on grade.
Any other feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Perry

Looks like a pretty lightly toned AU coin. Guess it all depends on the price and how badly you want it. It is the opinion of many that a 1948 is overpriced. They are always available. If you are patient you will get a decent one below current CCN trends.

You didn't say what grade the seller said it was or how much he is asking.
As Pacificoin says it looks around a AU55. The average selling price on ebay is around $1500.00.
Personally, I wouldn't buy a coin of this value unless it was certified by a top TPG.

I have been trying to complete my silver dollar collection this past year and a half. I am just missing the '47 ML and '48. Most of the dollars that I have bought on ebay were less than 75% Trends or Charlton including shipping and GST if there was any.

That is not the case of the 1948. I have been tracking graded ebay auction '48s (reputable grading companies) for over a year. The average selling price including shipping and 5% GST for me in Alberta if applicable is almost 85% of catalogue value. Some a bit under the 85%. Some a bit over. That is the average.

I have been bidding 75% and never win. I think I will have to up my bid percentage if I really want one.

Sorry, I am not that expert on grading. That is why my '48 purchase will be reputable graded. Sure they make mistakes but you should see the ones I make!

Hmm, looks like it could be an example of my elusive imaginary "shoulder fold" variety. https://goccf.com/t/189861&SearchTerms=1948.

Otherwise I'd say it looks high AU but cleaned. Edit: maybe MS but cleaned. The last picture I don't see wear in the hair.

I'm building a dollar set too, I'm taking it rather slow though because I have a whole life ahead of me and not so much coin funds. As for the grade all I can say is that its EF or higher. it sure is a shame that so much 48 dollars seem to be cleaned, my grandparents have one and its cleaned as well. Merry Christmas and good luck on your key dates!

Merry Christmas to all again.
Just so excited to see all your comments.
I usually buy graded ICCS coins. My local coin dealer has a few 48's for sale.
He's asking 2k for this coin. I'm in no rush to pull the trigger on this particular example.
AU55 or low MS is a decent grade.
However, I'm concerned that you all agree it's been cleaned.
What are the tell-tale signs?

I've been extremely fortunate to pull the trigger on 47ML MS62 and a 46 MS64.

One telltale sign is a series of fine parallel or close to parallel hairline scratches,
on the last large photo of Georges head, I can see some abrasions that looks like cleaning.
In the top photo look along the neck area and under the chin. Parallel hairline scratches.

It's possible the hairlines we see are on the 2x2 and not the coin, or perhaps it's "album rub" and not cleaning, so maybe check it again under magnification from various angles, and perhaps the dealer would be willing to remove it from the 2x2 (more pictures without plastic?). Who graded your 47ML and 46? Check the 46 for SWL and die clash varieties - mine has both but ICCS didn't attribute. Overall the 48 seems to be a nice example; is it worth 2k? I don't particularly think the 48 is overpriced but rather the 47ML is way undervalued, but that's been discussed many times here. What did you pay for the 47ML MS62?

Very true kbbpll, but I see this type
of hairline scratch on multiple photos from multiple
angles as well on the reverse. It could be on the
plastic, but my view is that it is consistent in the
photos along the neck especially. Be careful, buy a
coin that is already graded and certified by a TPG and
you know exactly what you are getting, especially key
date coins.

Indeed as Don stated there appears to be some patchy hairlines on this coin but it is still very attractive. The price of 2K for this one is a bit high in my opinion. If you are putting together a nice set and as you state in no rush to pull the trigger wait for a pleasing MS62 coin ICCS or CCCS graded , (current trend is CAD$2200). You will not be sorry.
Another tactic you can use when purchasing high end coins is this. Find a trustworthy dealer and tell them what you are doing ( in your case building a high end Silver Dollar set). Give them a want list with realistic expectations. Make the purchases with the proviso that you can always trade up to a better piece and get WHAT YOU PAID in trade on a better coin when available. Make sure you get proper detailed invoices and have the agreement in writing. This is a win, win with high end coins as the dealer can always sell your trade in piece again, especially if it was a coin you both agreed on in the first place.

For this kind of money, do not buy a RAW coin...there is a reason that it's not already in a holder. After all, you can get it done by ICCS, in a normal sized submission for about $25-30 returned, so why hasn't seller certified it? When a $2000 coin isn't graded, the dealer usually doesn't believe in TPG (welcome to 1974) or it HAS been submitted and found to be a problem coin.

If you check out ebay, there are about 20 1948 Silver Dollars for sale. Of those, 17 are certified and most under $2000.00.
There is an nice ICCS MS62 for about $1900 and a couple of AU50's for $1500.00, so you can certainly do better than your LCS.

Tripoli,
there can be numerous reasons why a coin is not certified. and NOT all have to be negative.
in Europe as an example, the majority of collectors do not want to have slabbed coins.
It needs again to be said:

Quote:
buy the coin, NOT the packaging!
