I bought this coin in a lot of three 1947's. This one has some nice luster, double on 9 and 7 in date.
Let me know what you think as to grade and any comments are welcome. Edited by SilverDon 01/04/2015 9:02 pm

I would say VF, nice find straight 7/7, haven't found one myself yet, for me straight 7s are tougher to come across than curved 7s , although trends doesn't agree with me. 47s are a bit scarcer than some other forties dates and trend prices reflect that.Looks like a flat back 9 but according to the book all straight 7s are in round back 9 dates. Also don't think there should be doubling on the 9 as only the last 2 digits were entered on this side of the pond. A close up of the date would be appreciated.

West Canuk I tend to agree with your observation of 1947 fifty cents availability. Seems that the curved 7 is way easier to find out here as well .

Will try to get a good shot of the date and put it up today. Now looking at the 9, you are correct, 7/7 like to hear that. Thanks for the good analysis west- canuck. Thanks for the comments. How's this.

Looks like a VF to me.... This is the Wide Date 1947 Straight 7 (7 touching ring) 7/7. Nice find.

Thanks for the comments west- canuck, Wireman, Pacificoin, it was sold as a VF so I am happy for the grade and happy to hear of the variety.
Did not know about the relative scarcity of the straight 7 over the curved 7.
Thanks pginrh, your knowledge of 50 cent coins is impressive.

Thanks for the additional pictures of the date, I see now it is a round back 9, and I guess I do have a straight 7/7 in Fine, (what does that say - too many coins, not enough time )here's a pic of mine.

The 7 is so much higher than the 4 in this case. Good problem to have west- canuck. pginrh if you could please send me a copy of the George VI 50-cent varieties publication I would be very grateful, my e-mail is enabled. Thanks for that SPP. This picture with glare and blown out contrast shows the step in the bar of the 7 pretty well.

pginrh: I also would be interested in such a publication... How can the common layman get a hold of this information? I have picked up a few hundred 50 cent pieces and absolutely love going through them! Any more information would just increase the enjoyment I have in going through 'em... Please send me a PM if possible.

Quote: The 7 is so much higher than the 4 in this case. Your 7/7 variety looks similar to Die 6 on page 321 of Charlton 2014, mine appears similar to Die 5, in which case it might be a 7/7/7 but it is too worn for me to be sure. If you don't have the 68th edition of Charlton, you should think about getting it, if only for the 50 cent varities section. Mine is getting fairly worn out and I have a second copy.Maybe next time I'm back east at a Toronto coin show I can get it autographed by the gentleman that researched these varieties.

There is NO 'Publication', just a manuscript that I put together. Some parts of it are in Charlton's 68th.
Hope the folks who requested it, and I sent it to find it useful.....
