I know that I am breaking one of the cardinal rules of RCH, but as I was unloading my nickels, I looked at the teller tray and noticed what appeared to be silver halves by the edges. I asked them, if they wanted to get rid of them, and they said "okay: How many do you want?" I said that I would be them all. SO I purchased $37 worth and found 2 40% silvers and a 2011-D NIFC. She explained that their coin machine does not take halves and that they have to hand roll them when customers turn them in. Okay? So I have to find another dump bank, to get rid of halves, if I start up on these.
I know that it was bad etiquette to buy from the dump bank, but I saw that silver.... Any thoughts?

I don't see anything at all wrong with that - I would have done the same, congrats. Small amounts of halves, I just spend.

I don't see a problem unless you just dumped a box of halves on them. Good eye!!

I have one bank I dump quarters and buy dimes at, as long as you don't dump the same denom you buy, you should be good.

It is bad etiquette to dump at your "pickup" bank that orders boxes for you which costs them money for every box. Picking from teller trays at any bank does not cost them anything and almost every teller I have asked for the dollar coins and halves from their trays they have been more than happy to get rid of so that they don;t have to count them at the end of the day since noone else wants them. And I always take everything they have and just put it in my pocket and leave to search later rather than stand there and try to cherry pick something from the pile.

When I did CRH, I did the same thing. Tellers were more than happy to get rid of halves in the teller tray. I once spotted a Mercury dime while making a deposit in person, but had no luck with the halves I bought from the teller tray. As much as I wanted to look through them on the spot, I also would pocket them and look through them at home.

Nothing wrong with that at all. Unless the teller is a collector as well, they are more than happy to get ride of those half dollars since they are not really used to pay out to customers or in circulation.

I would have taken it anyway. You can't pass up free silver. There wasn't anything wrong with that.

Similar story: I recently went to a bank to deposit (aka dump) about $300 in rolled halves. As Teller A was complaining about the fact she could not "sell" half dollars and they would go to the vault "for who knows how long, etc. etc.", I noticed a silver half in Teller B's coin drawer. I politely asked Teller B if I could buy her single half and she said, "of course", smiled, and handed it over the counter in exchange for 2 quarters. I call this excellent customer service
