Are bidders really this gullible? Are we all supposed to believe that for some reason the jar can't be opened to examine the contents so that the seller knows precisely what's in it?
Just ludicrous!

yeah, I agree, looks like they are all very worn coins salted with a gold coin for effect.

I think a new trend has just been born. I don't feel sorry for the winning bidder, whoever that might be. Tsk tsk tsk.

If this trend of collecting/selling coins in jars catches on, Whitman could suffer in sales ... Not really.
Dirty jars would perhaps be more convincing to the pathetic collectors who bid these offerings to unrealistic levels.
Apparently, the success of the previous seller begs imitation. The Grey Sheet may now have to add a jar section!

Sickening. I think in a previous thread we agreed that it was impossible to have coins and bills end up this way naturally.

@The Silver Searcher EXACTLY! I am thinking that this person saw that same ebay listing for coins in that magic jar and decided to copy them. It is all so silly.

I'm pretty sure these grifters compare notes on new schemes in the back alleys of ebay and elsewhere...

I'm disappointed on the $1 note, he could have at least put a low grade Black Eagle. At the rate of these scams, low grade 1917 STQs and 1908-s IHC are going to get hard to find.

The coins are strategically placed in the jar, mintmarks facing you, gold always up against the bill, all by the guy selling it. This is BS at it's finest.

I'm not so sure that these "estate jars" are a very good idea even from the standpoint of a seller. You're starting to see these going for thousands of dollars and if a buyer is savvy enough to learn that they have been duped, they are going to be furious. They aren't going to be just asking for a refund, they are going to be getting an attorney involved. I bet the first time one of these sellers loses a lawsuit and is ordered by the court to pay all the legal fees associated, it will be the last time they sell these jars. Better yet they might get some calls from their state's attorney general demanding transaction information.

Joe, I doubt these sellers are stupid. They can easily close down their PayPal and ebay accounts and skip out without a trace. I am sure they are poised to do just that. Plus a buyer would be silly to pursue a lawsuit for such a low amount, maybe a small claims court case but that likely would get no where since the seller would be able to be located in the first place.

It looks like a dealer doing year end inventory reduction on his dead stock.
There's lots of worn 90% silver which otherwise would sell for melt. The teaser is the cull $2.50 liberty which would otherwise land in the tub with old gold fillings and chains. I'll guess the jar contains $500 value as melt, but it's worth a lot more as individual coins. It's meant for someone happy filling holes in coin books.
I really don't think a dealer with this much positive feedback will be closing up shop, or getting sued. It's sharp-ish business to be sure. But you gotta do what you have to in order to survive, and hanging on to junk coins like these doesn't put food on the table.
[Just read the seller's added comments about what he thinks he sees in the jar...would it have been so difficult to just dump the jar out and inventory it for us...what a tease...]

Anyone who bids on something like this isn't smart enough to realize they got duped. They'll give positive feedback about all the great stuff they found. Sad.
