Hi, I'm new to the site and I was wondering if this Morgan dollar is real or not? I recently purchased it on ebay. The size and weight are fine and it's not magnetic. I apologize if the pictures aren't that great. Edited by Madness 12/30/2014 8:55 pm

We'll need higher resolution pictures to make a proper judgement.
Right now it could be fake, or just really badly polished.

Hard to tell with these pics. Try to post better ones.

Welcome to CCF. A circulated common date Morgan that looks fine, has the correct weight and size and is not magnetic? There's a 99.9% chance it's genuine. $20 coins are rarely made as high quality fakes. Very rarely.

If you have a strong enough magnet, try the magnet test!

First off, welcome. Since the photos still aren't sufficent to make a call on this coin, another question would be from what sort of seller on ebay did you buy it, and from where was it actully shipped? Someone who sells a lot of coins and has substantial feedback would be good, and if the shipment originated in the U.S. that would also suggest it's fine.

I've never heard of a Mogran dollar! Just messing with you! It appears most likely real, but the surfaces don't look quite right, which likely means that it has bean harshly cleaned recently. I would not suggest buying coins off of ebay if you're new to collecting. It looks about XF, which would make it worth about $20-25, but since it's been cleaned, it is worth a little over melt. Here are some resources to help you in buying and grading coins: http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/Photograde also has an app that you can download for free if you'd like. http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtmlNumismedia is used for coin prices. After you consult photograde (or us!) and determine the grade of the coin, you can find the price here! There are also some very nice, trusted sites that you can buy coins from. Here's a few of my favorites: http://www.coinbuys.comhttp://www.buyuscoins.comAnd for more expensive coins: http://www.davidlawrence.comI call these the "Numismatist Starter Pack" Edit: Oh, and

Looks genuine, but very harshly cleaned or whizzed.

I have seen many fake Morgans, and something about this one isn't rubbing me the right way. I think its the deticles around the edge. On many fakes, they are short and chubby. Do you have any other Morgans? If so, put them together and look at the rims, if one is wider then its fake. You can also use a digital caliper if you have one.

The images are far too small for conclusive opinion, but I really don't like what I'm seeing of the date and denticles.

I think it's real but looks like it's been put on a buffing wheel . Take a look at the date and the UM in Unum. Where the seller was unable to buff out the dirt or corrosion this is basically only a silver value coin now

I don't have many fakes here, most of them are at my shop. However, I will grab them and take more pictures so you can see some different qualities. Okay from what I have on hand, GUESS THE FAKE! I took these pics on the fly and realized how horrible they are but you get the idea.
