I was just thinking, it would be useful to people visiting the CCF site and to the users of this site if we had some kind of database of counterfeits with images and maybe diagnostics. For example, we could have an archive of all of the alibaba/aliexpress counterfeits for reference and members' own pictures of various counterfeits from other sources. It could be as complex as for every date and mintmark of every coin type, or it could just comprise of the general coin type to get an idea of the die transfer diagnostics. What I am thinking is that members can individually add to the database by uploading their own photos of counterfeit coins and maybe some additional info so that all the work does not lie on one or a select group of individuals.

I don't know if the mods or admins would consider making such a database available on this site, but I am pretty sure it would be helpful.

I'm sorry of this has been brought up before.

I already have something like that I actively work on outside of the forum. :-)

I'm also working on a user submission system right now, too.

I wouldn't mind a counterfeit sub-forum here, though.

I think you're onto something.
After 37 years of collecting now, I've seen a number of counterfeits. I even own a few for reference myself.

I think it's a great idea. I have several high resolution photos of fake silver dollars to contribute.

A counterfeit sub sounds like a good idea. Mods & admins, any thoughts on this?

My personal thought is, why are we wanting to duplicate Steve Caruso's work? Not to mention he has a pretty sizable head start.

Well, a counterfeit subforum here could serve as another source for education. After all, not all counterfeit coins are "faked" equally.

A sub-forum would at least be a home for the regular stream of, "Look at my coin. Is it real?" posts. :-)

I too like the idea of a sub-forum, Steve has done an admirable job with his website already, we should include links to it, and any other sites that are actively promoting research of counterfeits. Great idea!

I was thinking more of an addition to the 'coin facts' page (or something of the sort, like a sub-forum that can navigate Country-Type-Date/Mint) where users could add entries and see examples of genuine coins and fake coins and could compare the two to their coins. This way, there would be an organized (the key for effectiveness) collection of counterfeits for US coins, Canadian coins, midieval coins, modern European coins, and Ancient coins, though not necessarily exclusively to that list.

What made me think of the idea was that I was always comparing questionable coins to the listings on the AliExpress site, like this:

Sudden-Thought...-CCF-Counterfeit-Database

If we have a database of all of the Alibaba counterfeits, as well as many as possible of other independent counterfeits, we may have a source to protect buyers, such as those on ebay. There are literally thousands of different counterfeits on AliExpress right now, and to my knowledge, there is no source other than AliExpress itself that has thoroughly catalogued those counterfeits. Also, I'm not aware of many other sites, other than Steve Caruso's, that try to publish a collective list of counterfeits, not just of one series or just the key dates.

With the collective effort of CCF, such a compilation might not be too difficult and might be rewarding in the future.

Subforums dilute traffic, and need to be evaluated carefully for effect. Someone who usually hangs in Classic doesn't visit Canadian, and a Modern guy doesn't read Ancients. Counterfeits cross all issues and need to be discussed with the people who know the issue being faked, against a backdrop of the "real" coins they imitate. Most importantly, those most likely to need information on counterfeits - the casual unregistered reader making maybe their sole stop at CCF, a group far, far larger than posting members - won't be hitting a Counterfeit forum because they think their coin is real. They're hitting Classic or Moderns or wherever their coin fits. A bespoke Counterfeit forum therefore runs counter to what we all agree is the honorable goal for such a thing.

And I still see no reason to duplicate an existing work in this case. We aren't duplicating VAMworld or the Fly-In Club either.

This is all my own personal opinion, though, and not CCF policy. I will ensure it's on Bobby's radar for his input, because of course he has the final say. Regardless of my objections the idea has merit.

Your objections have merit as well, since you are a mod and think of these things. Possibly, there could be counterfeit subforums in their respective forums, such as Classic US counterfeits in the Classic US forum, Canadian counterfeits in the Canadian forum, ancient counterfeits in the ancients forum, etc.

True. Makes sense. As you said, Bobby will make the final decision.

My objections only have merit if Bobby agrees with them.

It's a great idea. A central clearinghouse of counterfeit information would be a huge benefit to numismatics. I like it better as a database than a forum because of the nature of the information presented.

Let me finish overhauling The Black Cabinet's database (it's one of my New Year's resolutions :-) ) and if you want, we can start a formal development thread somewhere on the CCF forum to discuss features, etc.

I agree with SsuperDdave. I am only one moderator and I move a few threads per day to the correct section. Often new users post questions in the Welcome Section, never even trying to find the correct section to post their question. Another sub-section will just dilute the forum as a whole.
