This is my first rotated die find. Could the experts please tell me what degree of rotation and what value if any this adds? Thanks

Hi Cindy - looks like it's minor rotation and may be within mint tolerances. I've heard +/- 10 or 15 degrees is considered 'within' tolerances. I've read here that rotation needs to be 45 degrees or more to be of value. There is a link to a resource that will tell you how many degrees you are rotated. Do a browse on the internet to see if you can locate it. Good luck!!

PS - I'm no expert.

It is almost completely upside down from where it should be.

Looking at the staples, it seems you have about 20 degrees rotation. Is that correct?

From what the OP is saying the rotation would be somewhere in the 155 degree area, or is it about 28 degrees as first thought?

Try taking a pic of the coin over a mirror, that way we see both sides at the same time in relation to each other.

I would think it would be more than that....I only put 3 staples as a guide. The reverse should be right side up if there was no error

I took a look in Strike it Rich - not listed.
I took a look at Rotated Dies - not listed. http://rotateddies.50webs.com/census.htm

This looks like it could be a new discovery unless its listed in CherryPickers Guide.

Nice find in that case, should be a good premium for that less the wear. ;)

It's almost 180° rotated so I would guess 155° sounds about right. Not sure about the value but I would say that's one worth holding on to.

Nice find. Could you give us a close up on the rim area on both sides. Some of the magician coins show an altered rim. Not that I'm seeing that on your coin, but to confirm it is real.

A close up would confirm it.

Thanks Cindy - looks like a winner! I see varying amounts for quarters with this degree of rotation - around $50 in Extra Fine condition. Given that this isn't listed on either resource it posted, it could mean that this is undiscovered. I only really collect cents and nickels, so my CherryPickers Guide only covers these. Perhaps another member can confirm if your year is or isn't listed. If not, it could fetch a higher premium.

Nice find!
