Am wondering if there is something that I don't see on this coin ... sure would like to own it but am wondering why the seller hasn't had it TPG'd since it is a key and is in at least XF condition (?) Your expert opinions would be appreciated: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1811-1-2C-B...em1c4c091568

I have nearly zero experience with Half Cents, so take what I say with a grain of sand....but when I clicked on the link and saw the image my gut told me it was a fake. The color looks off and artificial. It just doesn't feel right

I don't know these that well either and not every valuable coin is in a slab. That said, the alignment of the date, specifically the ones in eleven, don't seem to match these images from PCGS: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/D...1135?redir=tThese were not exactly mass produced and so there is probably variations in how the dies were punched, but this would definitely give me pause before I shelled out that kind of money.

It's the third-lowest mintage in the series and a ridiculous Condition Rarity in upper grades. There are only two in Mint State slabs. In terms of survivorship, it's the Key Date Half Cent. In this grade, it's a $10k coin with original surfaces. It's seriously underpriced if it's real, even as a Details coin. I am entirely unsurprised to see early copper being sold raw. EAC folks don't worry about slabs as much as other specialists.

I know zero about this series, but from what I know about copper, Its definitely recolored. Also looks a little Chinese to me.

There are only two obverse dies used for this date and this matches neither. My vote is 100% chinese garbage.

I did a quick search on AliExpress and found these. The first is an image from NGC. Here is the ebay photo: Here are AliExpress photos: First note the size of the stars. Then note the thickness of the ones. Then note the diagonal mark above the 5th star on the right. Compare that area to the ones on the last two AliExpress examples. By this evidence, FAKE!

Yeah the NGC comparison photos definitely show some glaring differences, the lips of the bust look all wrong, as well as the chin, but most obviously the stars.

You can report it. Maybe ebay will do something, maybe they won't.

I call myself a copper collector but I only own a few Half Cents and have never really studied them. Great coin if it's real.

Good detective work TypeCoin! I wonder where all of the other key dates that this seller has listed come from? AliExpress?

When looking at the NGC and the ebay photo the nose definitely was the most obvious difference to me.

Thanks to all - especially SsDd and TC9. Some day I will maybe have your knowledge. Am steering clearof this coin and hope ebay is more aggrerssive at keeping fakes off of their site.
