I am a novice at grading and have a question as to whether either of the following coins are actually F12.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/20124367167...RK:MEBIDX:IT

http://www.ebay.com/itm/22165140015...RK:MEBIDX:IT

LIBERTY in neither of these coins seems to match the picture for F12 in PCGS Photograde. Also the ANA Grading Standard for F12 says "LIBERTY normally shows with no letters missing. CCF definition for F12 says "LIBERTY completely visible. This does not seem to be the case for either coin.

Need help in understanding what I am getting wrong here.

Not my area, but the same criteria applies to other coins, especially the Barber series. Seven letters 'visible' does not always mean seven letters "readable."
"Completely" visible appears to mean "if a tiny portion of a letter is visible."
The first coin has nothing in its favor.
The second coin has seven letters showing but ...

Need to hear from Cent collectors.

1st one - Typical market grading for the key date in the series. VG-8 AT BEST.
2nd one - This one is actually in the VG-10 to F-12 range, and I think it looks good. Every letter in Liberty should be partially visible; it's really close, I seem them all except the Y.

I think the 2nd coin may go F-12. I believe I can see all letter in LIBERTY partially visible.

The 1st coin is definitely overgraded (market graded).VG-6 VG-8

The first coin is way over graded but the price is not too bad. The second coin is full F-12 and still a pretty good price. I'd buy the second one if you have the money.

The first coin looks like F12 to me and the second is in a PCGS holder and if it says F12 it probably is.

Thank you. All of the comments were helpful.

My conclusion from the comments is: All 7 letters in LIBERTY need to be only partially visible for a grade of F12.

By extension, I assume that all letters in LIBERTY need to be completely visible for a grade of VF20.

Is this correct?

I was taught by my Great Grandfather years ago that to be a VF the line under LIBERTY must be clear and distinct. He was old school as it gets but he collected Indian heads for a lifetime so that's my mantra too.

According to Snow's guide:

F-12: All letter in LIBERTY clearly readable; base of headband not complete

VF 20: Lower edge of headband clear and distinct
