I suspect that this coin has been cleaned but am still a rookie at this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/12153509948...RK:MEBIDX:ITI seem to remember reading somewhere on this forum, that the "doubling" ( what's the correct term?)around the letters and feathers is an indicator of mechanical cleaning. Do I have this right?

Yes, probably cleaned. The reverse color is very uneven. The doubling is normal for Indian cents and is referred to as Longacre doubling named after the designer. It's just a characteristic of some IHCs and adds no premium.

The photography is such that I can't be sure of surface originality. This would be a risk, though.

Interesting. In its current state though, would you pay the $180 for it even though cleaned? I would guess there are few circulated IHs that have not been cleaned in one form or another. Still a nice looking piece as presented, like to see it in hand.

Poor photography to really make a good call on this one, but I suspect that it is clean- seems lightly rubbed at the very least. The letter doubling is Longacre doubling, commonly seen on Indian cents from this era.

The thing that bothers me most about that coin is the little silvery spot below the T in CENT. There's another dot at the NE corner of the E in ONE. Kind of leads me to believe that the coin was 'conserved' at some point.

Definitely cleaned. Color is just off. After awhile you'll be able to spot this stuff like a hawk.

Something odd about that coin. Notice so little wear around the edges and yet massive wear in the middle. Reverse too shows so little wear. All dirt that should be inside letters and numbers has been cleared away. Sure sign of cleaning. I'm still confused about all the wear on the head.

Yes, cleaned. Also some pitting on the obverse, no chance this gets a problem free grade. Also, the coin has a minor struck through below the first A in AMERICA and the feather - although this doesn't really increase the value.

Thanks everyone for your input. Slowly but surely I am learning more about IHC with the help of CCF members. mycrob, I was unaware of "Longacre doubling". I have since searched CCF for old threads on this subject and have found some excellent info.
