If a coin is listed as a AU-58 for example, it is possible it could 'slide' into Mint State.

A lot of dealers would classify their au's as slider uncs. Meaning the coin is so close to unc. but not quite there. I don't believe any collector would use that term for their own coins.

Let's see if I get this correct.
Scroll down and you'll see LOTS of definitions:

When I hear the term "Slider" the first thing that comes to mind is the Morgan dollar. If I am remembering what I read correctly many of these coins where shuffled around from bank to bank thus causing minor wear without actually ever going into circulation.

I've heard it used negatively and positively. Positively in that my AU coin looks like an MS, and negatively in that people try to charge MS prices for a nice looking AU hoping to fool people.

Sometimes has the connotation that can pass off to the unwary as a higher grade.

There are a few definitions, but I always use it to describe bumping the coin up a grade. AU+ can become MS, or an MS-63 PCGS green tag or ICCS embossed tag becomes an MS-64. In that case though, the "sliding" is the result of a reduction in strictness of grading, which would be more commonly called grade creep.

I think the classical definition would be a high AU coin "sliding" into an MS holder even though it has seen a slight amount of circulation.
