Hi members, I am doubtful to the authenticity of this Mexico 8 Reales for the following reasons.

1)The luster of the coin makes me not sure it is of sufficient silver though I can't rule out by ring test or neodymium magnets.

2)There are a few unexplained black indented spots on the observe. Is this a sign to indicate the coin is electroplated by a layer of silver?

3)The "。" fraction of the mint mark looks odd to me when I compare with other Mexico 8 Reales. The script is too slim!

4)The edge is heavily worn or scraped but the net weight of the coin is still 27.01 grams. The diameter of the coin is also a bit lower to 38.2-38.6 mm. If the edge is intact, will the weight be a bit higher to over the standard weight? I mean the scrapping is done to cover up the over-weight of the coin by the forger.

Other than that the coin is very fine to me.

Please give your comments. Thank you.

Hi Henry, this one is good in my opinion.

All the listed problems are encountered on a regular basis.

Not sure about this one. First off the date on the coin is 1785. The green color bothers me, have you soaked and rinsed it in acetone? The denticles look kind of pointy on parts of the bust side. The "E" in ET does not match the E in DEI. Weird flaws and pitting on the bust side. The edge is too worn/damaged for me to comment.

For me it is good.
The weight is good and the measure can be good, since different dies could swing a few millimeters, edge wear can be correction weight, but also of issue, not always the weight was corrected in one of the sides of the coin .

Best Regards

The black spots are proably AgCL. They can be removed with a thiourea silver cleaning solution - possibly. Use a Q-tip for about 60s.

Its a tough removal but have been succesful in the past. As you may know chlorine and sulfur are the top two contaminants on a surface of a coin. See coin chemistry by Weimer. I have verified this in the lab ... both these spots and the common #1 & #2 contaminants. Chlorine from human handling and environment and sulfur just from the environment.

From your edge photos, it does not look like you can determine if the coin has the proper edge design overlaps. I find the section of apparent wear on the edge to be inconsistent with the wear on the other sides. That, plus the post minting edge filing, makes me think this is a Type II or Type III forgery.
