My father passed on this past September and we`ve found a couple dozen rolls of wheat pennies that we don`t know what to do with. I went to a couple of coin shops yesterday to ask a question or two about them and was told at the first shop that they are worth 1 and a Half Cents a piece (scrap value). The other shop told me that he pays 2 cents a piece for them. I`ve gone through a couple rolls and found coins from the late teens and 1920`s and I think they should certainly be worth more than 2 cents. I know the values differ with mint marks, condition of coin, etc. and I also know that if I was extremely lucky I could find a coin worth considerably more. My father was not the type to go through them looking for anything in particular. To him, a Wheat penny was a Wheat penny and they weren`t making them anymore. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My brothers and I would be happy just to get a few cases of beer out of them:)

I would suggest going through them and looking for key dates. You can find many websites that will tell you what dates to look for. Also any easily identifiable errors or varieties. Other than that you can post them on ebay and try to sell them per roll. You won't find much better from a dealer for wheat's I do not think.

August, I am sorry for your loss, I have lost both my parents, and know there is a huge amount of work on top of all of the other things going on in your situation. The pricing you got from the dealers is what I would expect they would say, because they might be able to sell them for 5 to 25 cents each. However you need to go through and see exactly which dates you have and what mint marks (S,D or none, which means P) rule of thumb is the older the coin, the more its worth, and the ones you want are 1909 - 20 and looking for the s mint marks. you can google Lincoln wheat cents and find a few sites dedicated to just these coins. I am assuming you have opened the rolls to verify there are no Indian Head cents, or any other coins in the rolls? I am sure there are more than a few people on here that could grade and value your coins, but you will need to provide some images. If you find there are no key dates, or high grade (mint condition) coins, then you could try selling the lot on ebay, or craigslist, you will probably get more money than trying to sell to a dealer. Also you can search on this site for inheritance and there are a few posting already that are good reference points. Good Luck

to CCF.Might be a good time to start a set and get involved in the hobby. If you want to check them for key/semi key dates and errors/varieties that's what I would do. If not,put them on ebay as unsearched rolls. They are worth 2-3 cents each at a dealer. John1

Quote: My brothers and I would be happy just to get a few cases of beer out of them:) This has to be one of the first honest reason to cash in that I have read here at CCF. August West. sorry for you loss. You could get a few cases if you do some research. Dealers will give you 2-3 cents for the normal wheats. E-Bay will cost you a seller fee plus shipping. Consider Craigslist.

..August West to CCF, sorry about your Father. I would take the advise the members have given you, You could look through them to look for 'key' dates but, then they would be searched, if your father has just put them away withoutt looking at the dates there may be some dates in them that are collectable.

I respect that opinion Chris and I just may do that. Being newly retired I`ve got the time to check them all out which in a way is kind of fun. Collecting coins could be a new hobby for me. My wife doesn`t think I should ski anymore but I don`t think she would worry too much about me getting hurt collecting coins:)

Sorry for your loss. I don't know your family situation but I would recommend just keeping them for the sentimental value (especially if you are only going to get enough $$ for a few cases of beer). IMO they will only become more valuable as time goes on. Plus it would give you guys something to remember your father by. I got a bunch of coins from my father and grandfather when they passed away a little over a year ago. Now I have started collecting (coin roll hunting!) on my own and am having a good time with it.

don't believe for a second that they are only worth 2 cents a piece!

2-3 cents is about what a common circulated Wheat cent is worth.

and very sorry for your loss. Here's my suggestion: Buy a case of beer on the front end, then go through the rolls and toast your father every time you break open a new roll. Then buy a case of beer on the back end. And keep the wheats.
