In my latest search of 1955-S rolls, I found a BIE that is not in Cohen. Turns out it's a later stage of Cohen 1955-S B149, with almost full BIE break! I decided to have some fun and did an animated GIF showing the transition from B149 to the "new" BIE and back again.

Has anyone here seen this "new" BIE before?

You know the downside of this? There may be intermediate stages, and now you have to watch for them.

I call that an UP-side!!

But I don't think there is anything in the middle, at least there would not have been many coins minted in middle stages. Reason I say this is there is not much die wear evident between these two stages. The two dies look pretty much the same in all other areas except the larger breakout. My two source images are off by maybe 1 pixel horizontal and maybe 2 pixels vertical, but even so you can see VERY little difference in the flow lines and small die markers between the two.

The GIF looks great. The only I would change is the speed. Slowing it down a bit would allow the transformation to be seen better. But the images are perfect. Nice job.

Are the BIE varieties in other years as well? Reason I ask is, I found one in a different year, that looks similar. Can't recall the year, but do believe it was a wheat. I'm at work now.

They are die chips. Yes they can happen in any area between the devices. The reason so many were found on the 1950's wheat cents is that they used the dies too long after they should have retired them. Hard to identify them as they progressively get worse with use of the dies.
