As a newby I have really liked reading all the posts, and decided that I needed a good reference book. So I went on everyones favorite auction site and bought the 2014 Red Book because that was the cheapest one and the bonus for me was it was the large print version. The great thing was I got it in 2 days, so I am already able to look and learn. I really like the large print for a new guy, the pics are that much easier for me to figure out the finer details.

Good. Lot of good data in the Red Book, just don't pay too much attention to the prices. They are out of date by the time the book was printed (late 2013) & they represent full retail. We all hope to pay less than that when we buy and of course we know we'll get less when we sell...

I believe that's also a spiral bound, which is what I like because then it lays flat open and I don't have to worry about messing up the binding by holding it open!
I actually collect Red Books. For me, it's a fun and inexpensive way to track values of particular grades of a coin. No, it sure is not exact, but when I'm doing a big purchase there's nothing wrong with a 50 year trend line to extrapolate and examine! (And it's fun for me because... well, I'm a coin nerd.) You have to make some assumptions about coin grading, but...
If you think that 2014 was cheap, see about a 2004 and a 1994 (and a 1984, et cetera). It's not until you get back to the '50s that they get expensive.

I remember my first Red Book. I spent hours looking at it. I was amazed at how very little I knew about US coins, not that I thought I knew a lot, but there was more than I ever expected. Enjoy!

Reading the ' Red Book' every few years has kept my knowledge fresh. And yes, ignore the prices. The book's value lies in its succinct descriptions of each coin;s place in history. Welcome rcfarmer!

Great book. I suspect Whitman Publishing owes this forum a lot of money for all the suggestions made here to by one. I like many people collect that Red Book. I now have all of them from the 1st Edition to present. And I'm old enough to have purchased the that 1st one when it first came out. Just remember that as a book made once a year, it is almost impossible to predict the days values of coins.

rcfarmer welcome! You made a very smart move. The Red Book is a great source of info, even if the coin values are a bit inflated, but they do give you a good idea of the relative value of the coins. If you have any questions be sure to post them. There are literally thousands of folks here that will be happy to help you learn more.

Thanks for the input, I really bought it for the info about the coins, the prices are not too important to me. Most of the coins are way out of my price range. But this book gives me the info I need to start doing something I have really found interesting on this board and that is coin roll hunt.

Well then... the next thing you need to do is sell your first few good finds and buy the CherryPickers Guide for the series(es) you like. THAT will keep you off the streets and out of trouble (grin)...

Everyone says to "ignore the prices" but I have found them to be pretty close in most cases. It clearly indicates which coins are going to be too expensive for me, anyway!

If only you posted this last week, I didn't think about buying the 2014. I ordered the cheapest 2015 on the bay... Haven't bought one in 10 years, so 2014 would have been fine with me.

Welcome rcfarmer, sounds like you're off to a good start. I'm not sure I would sell my earlier finds, due to the emotional attachment. I finance my addiction buy cutting corners in other ways. Soap is a luxury. Turn off the lights to save electricity and learn Braille. Sweaters not furnaces. If it grows in the refrigerator, it's probably healthy. Have Grandma show you how to get free sweeteners. Well, you get the idea. Welcome aboard.
