Looks like a nice AU coin, but strongly dipped...

I see lustre broken/missing in the open fields. The only cartwheel lustre I can see left is in between the tight spaces between the design. This indicates circulation.
I'll leave the grading to those better than I am.
Edit: Okay, I don't know what a dipped coin looks like but I do know they didn't chrome the dies in 1936. Not sure when they started.

I mentioned this on a previous post on my 1870 no lcw versus lcw...
But I think ICCS is inclined to give a lower grade and NOT write down the "details" versus giving the actual grade and providing the details....
It's a bit frustrating if you ask me...

chernard Your coin may be a touch undergraded. Looks like it possibly could be AU. Your coin shows excellent original lustre with the only lustre breaks are in the fields. This is usually from circulation. ICCS are very tough graders and my experience with them is that they usually get it right. Thanks for sharing.

I agree, it's undergraded. Looks like an easy AU to me

wireman... Quote: Looks like a nice AU coin, but strongly dipped... The coin looks AU to me... so if SPP thinks it's been dipped aggressively.. I only suspect that it's and AU coin with details that aren't mentioned.. just my hunch edit: I suspect it was down graded and the details weren't mentioned.. that's just my opinion and someone else thinking that it had been dipped made me inclined to say what I had said.. now coin in hand and if the coin wasn't dipped and I couldn't see any other issues... well from the pics it certainly looks AU to me... but I will stand by my oringal hypothesis on this one for now

maybe it was the fact that it was dipped that they lowered the grade. However, i'd still give it an AU

I agree with an AU grading with possibly a details mention. Can't see why they would downgrade because of dipping.

Quote: Can't see why they would downgrade because of dipping. ICCS commonly "net grades" coins like this. Dipping an EF or AU coin really brings out all the bag/circulation marks and kills the fragile lustre that remains in the fields. This coin is meaty enough for an AU-50, but other ICCS AU-50 graded coins will have nicer lustre (generally having not been dipped). Yet this piece is too nice/market acceptable to call it AU-50 "Cleaned". So their solution is to dock it some points call it a straight grade EF-45. From a seller's standpoint, I would much rather have a coin like this in an EF-45 straight grade holder vs an AU-50 "Cleaned" holder.

cbernard: SPP-Ottawa and Pokermandude nailed it. Pristine luster trumps surfaces and strike

Thanks to everyone. I appreciate the comments. I haven't had any experience viewing dipped coins so never really knew what to look for.

OK guys, key question: How can you say with such a certainty that this coin was dipped ?
The OP took normal pictures to the best of his ability and you guys say it is dipped? Please think about it again. ICCS would have noted the coin as cleaned I believe. I say that the pictures were taken through 2x plastic! and that will / should stop anyone from making such a statement unless you are absolutely sure. IF you guys are so sure, please, please let us know why and your reasons. Just to say it is dipped, is not a real good and convincing answer. Is it now? .
Maybe I will do a test soon with you and see how many of you will recognize a dipped coin through 2x plastic.

47P7: I don't feel comfortable grading coins via pictures because luster is hard to judge without having the coin in hand. One thing you can see from these photos is that the coin is well struck with no major disturbances. ICCS graded it an EF 45. That leaves me with the only conclusion that the coin was over dipped and net graded as market acceptable .
