From time to time, members proudly post 'new' acquisitions, and from our admiration, they take pride. Well, sometimes we don't get what we 'go after', and the we deserve a bit of sympathy (Lol).

Anoob and I were talking about this type yesterday. They are rare coins and really nice, but way too much money for me to ever concided buying one.

Topcat7, I am rarely if ever nowadays in competition for a coin, but I offer you a cup of tea and sympathy. The "if onlys" are a part of the hunt, I guess.

yeah, I think we all have a few of these. I don't gun for the top shelf stuff like that, but I have several coins that still haunt me. the last one I just forgot confused about the end time of an auction and forgot to bid. I would have won if I did remember. bummer.

Do I have one that got away? Yes and No. Years ago I had the opportunity to buy a (shoddy) Laelianus for A$300. In the end I decided against it and Laelianus is still (way) on top of my wanted list. So yes, I missed that opportunity but no, I would have regretted to have it in that poor quality.

I missed a bunch of targets in the December-January big auction hoopla. It wasn't for lack of trying either :( Here are some I dearly wanted but was outbid, even when I repeatedly exceeded my planned max: A spectacular AE24 from Akragas (Sicily), Triton auction: A well-struck and well-centered EL hekte from Mytilene (Lesbos), Triton auction: This Antoninus Pius drachm from Alexandria, reverse of Serapis Pantheos. It's a plate coin in Emmett's reference: ...plus another handful. If anyone reading this was the successful bidder on any of these... I did pick up five coins in the later auctions and will post them when they arrive :)

The newest thread is in the Classic US Forum, so I thought I'd resurrect this relatively new thread. I had to let these go as my budget could not justify buying them, even at a quarter of their value. I'd want to keep them, not resell them. All told, the three sold for only about $100, but I am recovering from my Ancient Chinese buying spree. Two Zhou Dynasty knives (not coins) A Zhou Dynasty prototype knife coin (there are no reinforcement ridges and the handle is of the same thickness as the very dull blade, redering it useless as a knife).

Well... I´m sure that I´m not going to "finish" the collection... There will be always that coin that I cannot afford, or that coin that I was not lucky enought to find, or... So I have decided to enjoy the collecting process, I never buy a coin in an auction (I enjoy talking to the dealer), I try to discover small histories hiddden in my coins... an example: This coin SEEMS to be a barbarous copy of a follis of Constantinus I or perhaps II and... ...really it´s a barbarous copy but... If you look carefully... A new legend appears! So we must think... Till... I read "IMP C VAL LIC", so I suppose that this coin was struck using a Licinius I follis as planchet... so... Why?

When it comes to losing at auction, I'm a champ. I've been beat on scores of coins over the years. The most recent two are below, from part 3 of Baldwin's auction of coins from the David Sellwood collection. I REALLY wanted these two, but it became clear during the live online bidding that some other collectors, with deeper pockets, really wanted them too. The second coin (the Artabanos), with a conservative estimate of 300 - 400 British pounds, sold for 4,200. Ouch. I had to content myself with a lot of six more common tets. Mithradates III 87-80 BC Sellwood 31.2 (Orodes I) Artabanos IV c. 10-39 AD Sellwood 62.1-4 var (Artabanos II)
