My first post and not my last.

Got the coin bug a few months back and having a great time.

I'm making a 100 year birth set for my son, he was born in 2011 and I thought it would be cool to give him a nice set of circulated coins from 1911.

I picked this cent up recently and the deep strike sucked me into it.
I paid a pretty penny for it (no pun intended....OK, pun intended)and being new to the coin scene want to learn from the more experienced.
I think this is a MS65BN due to the scratches. I'm really stuck on the depth of the strike and have seen higher graded cents with way less depth. I'm noticing strong strikes are not necessarily high grades. Can someone elaborate on that?
What does the blob of junk on the reverse do for the grade?

Thanks and I look forward to hearing back.

and I'm glad to hear that. Many people register, post once, then leave.
As for your coin, which is a pretty nice one to start with, it looks to be MS62-64BN. I have no clue whether or not the carbon spot on the reverse will warrant a details grade, but it does take away from eye appeal. Nice 1911 Lincoln One50!

Thanks for the welcome and the grade.
I have millions of questions, I could flood these boards.
I'll start off slow, I don't want to scare anyone :)

That is a beauty. It is rare to see such a strong strike. A weak strike will keep an otherwise deserving coin from grading higher than MS66. Conversely, a strong strike will not increase the grade of an otherwise undeserving coin.

If I didn't know better, I would suspect this coin was high relief. In any event, I think yours is MS64 RB. Nice pickk up.

Superb strike!!

Definitely from a fresh set of dies (EDS = early die state).

Believe MS65BN is spot on for the grade, maybe even a 66!

63-64BN if it has cartwheel luster. Your pictures need a little work but that's a good start! Welcome to CC!

Wow! what a great coin. MS-65 BN at least. The reverse spot is sorta ugly but I don't feel it warrants a details grade.

Wow , now I know why you fell in love with that strike ! carbon spot on reverse is a demon for all unc. Lincoln collectors. and there is nothing you can do to remove it. however you might be able to stop it from spreading further by applying just a small drop of Verdi-care on the spot. let it sit for 8-10 minutes then dab it dry with Q-TIP. ask badthad, maybe he has a better way of treating that rev. spot. MS-65RB .

This is as good a strike as you'll ever see on a Lincoln. Massive. 1911 Proofs don't come struck this well. This coin is one where the tiny stuff out by the rim, and the carbon spot on the reverse, have to be factored into grading. Been a while since I've had to start at 70 and count down towards a grade for a coin posted here, but this coin is that good.

I have it at 66BN. It's a couple tiny ticks and that carbon spot from Top Pop for the date. What a coin.

I am not worthy!
OBV looks like a Matte Proof! REV has spot, but what can you do?
If this was in my collection I would have to consider this MS-66 BN like some have said already.
Just a fantastic coin!
