Of course these are iffy when uncertified. The odd wear at the top and bottom are suggestive to me of its having been mounted somehow. Interesting possible die crack high on the right pillar. The center fleur de lis don't seem properly aligned, at least the top two of them. Overall, I can't work up much enthusiasm for this specimen.

Apparently, I do not like it either.

We definitely need to see the edge!

Weight and diameter also. Is it magnetic?

I don't have it in hand. It was offered to my by someone who knows that I have interests in Mexican coins.
He sent me over the listing pictures for a preliminary yea or nay.

Without seeing the edge it is hard to be sure. I suspect it may be a forgery based on the line that appears under the IND and extends to near the R in REX. If that is an actual arc in the field and not an optical illusion caused by the angle of the picture I would feel fairly strongly that the coin is bad. The class can only be determined by the results of density and XRF tests.

I passed, it just didn't seem right. But the more I think about it, for $60, I probably should have taken the chance. It is a good looking coin.

I was able to locate 6 different die pairs for Numismatic Forgeries of the 1799 Mo FM - all of those are distinctly different from the coin above. For some reason the date is very popular with modern forgers. While other dates have 1 or 2 types - 1799 has an atypical number of Class 3 forgeries.

Too bad we never got to find out for sure how to classify this die pair.
