I think it looks like gas bubbles.

I agree. It looks like the columns are raised besides the fields. If it were a did gouge the columns probably wouldn't be affected. Here is one some what like it found.

It's a pretty deep gouge and yes it's definitely plated inside the damage-no sign of any missing plating at all-having trouble with reverse image for some reason,will try again
