I wasn't thrilled about any of the designs but was happily surprised they considered an African American depiction of Lady Liberty. I'm still waiting for an Asian American depiction though.

Looks like Angelina Jolie to me.

FYI it's no longer going to be Ultra High Relief according to the article I read.

This design is still just a recommendation of the final two designs. The Sec of the Treas. still has the final say.

I read the silver medal would not be high relief, but still higher relief than the ASE. The gold version is still going to be high relief afaik.

I'm a bit confused... why is the eagle carrying an oak branch? What's the significance there?

I think it is supposed to be an olive branch, a symbol of peace.

The fine arts committee suggested that it be shortened.

Kim Kardashian, the modern face of Liberty

Also, I don't think that is the reverse that the CAC and CCAC recommended.

The lady holding the Torch and Flag looks like a beautiful woman, rather than Liberty.
The Eagle should be holding arrows as well as an oak twig.
Design otherwise acceptable, but I do not think it would be technically suitable for high relief without extensive modification. OK for low relief.

This link says the reverse is different...

Here is a duplicate thread with comments...

https://goccf.com/t/196357

I locked the other thread and linked it here to keep discussion in one place.

I am also moving this to the US Modern Forum since it is not really a commemorative. Actually, being medals might mean a move to the TME forum.

Sel caught the lack of arrows. I saw that immediately.
Vote is 'no.'

The oak leave/branch is traditionally seen as a symbol of strength. You will also find it on the back of the current dime. it has appeared on other US coins as well. It just isn't as common as the olive branch (Which isn't even indigenous to this country.)

I have to say, I really like it. We've all said, at one time or another, we wish they would go back to a liberty design etc. Well, it looks like this is an effort to go in that direction, so I applaud the designs. I think that the coin will look less like a supermodel when minted, and I think it will translate well. I love the reverse.

No coin will ever make everyone happy, but I think this is a fresh idea and I think its addressing something that a lot of collectors have wanted for a long time.

A few things I don't follow... is this gold coin going to replace the St Gaudens design bullion coins or will it be in addition to? Is this something they will make every year or just in 2015?

Same applies to the silver... is it just a one year deal as a medal or will it be a recurring product from year to year.
