Hello,
I bought this on an online auction for $49. The pictures showed dark areas but in hand those areas are green verdigris: small spots, though. Of concern: Obverse- "A" in "America" and "N" in "United". Reverse: "N" in "One"
I like the strike and color but I am worried about those spots. I read the PCGS guarantee and, evidently, their guarantee doesn't extend to copper color (toning) and surface corrosion issues.
I have heard about these early PCGS "rattlers" I think they are called. And, yes, it does rattle. To be honest I thought I could trust a coin at 63 in this type of holder. Anyway, I figure my options are:
1. Return (I do have that option).
2. Crack it open and try to conserve it with my little bottle of Verdicare (sp?) : Honestly, I haven't had much more success with this stuff than q-tipping with acetone.
3. Send it into a
TPG (or back to PCGS- although that may be out because I am not a member) and have it conserved. But by the time I do all that I may be spending more than the coin is worth, especially if the verdigris is deep.
So, here are some pics: the best I can do. Photography in a holder sure is another issue altogether.
What do you think?
