There are a couple of examples listed in the 1970 Zoell (yay, finally found one from later than the 60s). I can't take a pic of it right now, maybe later.

In this series because of the war they were using the dies to almost complete failure... you will see that there are a lot of varieties in spacing of the dates as well, clashes were common... I'm not sure if the 44 hoof through is uncommon.. but I would love to see some pics!!

Wide date variety would place the last 4 in contact with the hoof.

Since there at least six distinct 'hoof to 4' dies, we need that picture to be able to see what one you have.... BTW that is not a valid Zoell number, as it should have a letter in front.

that's strange since I copied it right out of the book, mune is a first edition, I think second printing from 1961, perhaps they were listed with the letter after the number for his first edition?, ill check when get home.

In the Third Variety editions, Zoell finalized the format of the way that he classifed all subsequent varieties. I am sorry I didn't look far enough, I located my copy of the First edition, located the 445o and found that it changed to P445q in the later editions.

pginrh, is it in the major or minor varieties? I borrowed a library book 5th edition minor varieties and the only one numbered with "445q" at the back has a "FL" in front, not a "P". Is it this one? I found a "445o" in the 2nd edition with "L" at the front, but it refers to a die crack on the obverse. I can't find any "445q". Do different editions have different numbers in them? I currently don't have the 3rd edition minor varieties to check, only have the major. I wonder what Zoell uses for his pictures, it doesn't look like a photo, but it doesn't look like a drawing either.

That's not the one, mine is just a blob of die chip going straight from the hoof to the 4, and also covering part of the tail of the 4 without any die cracks.

Zoell's Third Minor edition included all previous minor varieties but changed to a new method of classification.... the Fourth Minor included all new discoveries that weren't in the Third, and the Fifth Minor had all new minor variety discoveries that were not in the Third or Fourth Minor editions.... So you need the Third, Fourth and Fifth to see all the minor varieties that Zoell illustrated... P445q is a minor variety and can be found in the Third Minor catalogue.
Zoell's Fourth Major catalogue is all you need for Major Varieties.
Zoell did not use a normal camera to take his pictures and he was not above emphasizing the flaw to better illustrate it.

These are the 1st edition (1961) varieties of the 1944. Notice that there is no letter in front of the number. Would love to see a pic..

That's why there's only a few 1944s listed here while I remember seeing a bunch in the 3rd edition. Unfortunately, my library only has the 2nd, 3rd (both parts) and 5th (minor only). I can't borrow them infinitely, so I made digital copies of them for myself. I have yet to make a digital copy of the 3rd edition minor for my reference since I don't know if it would take the strain of scanning (a lot of their books were re-bound with their own cover for some reason, and some were not done well).
Was there only 5 editions of Zoell catalogues?
