A few of the different 1944 varieties. I welcome any comments plus I'm still figuring out how to best capture DDs because I realize straight front pics isn't going to reveal same. Wide date, flat back 9, very low 4  Wide date, flat back 9, but the 4s high compared to prev  Narrow date, flat back 9  Hoof over 4/4, die crack (a must have for every GeorgeVI 50c collection)  Plugged 4, wide date  |

Never seen the plugged 4 before.. is that grease filled?

The filled '4' coin is caused by a die chip. Zoell P445p.
If the coin is in a near MS state you will see on the extremely low 4's coin there is a 4/4 on the diagonal of the last 4....
On the hoof through 4 die crack (Zoell FLP445p if there is also a die crack from the hoof to the tail).
The pictures are good, they are far better than mine, sice I use a scanner and the glare overpowers the finer details.

That's very interesting! There appears to be a die crack from the tail towards the hoof, unless it's just a scratch, but it's not complete.  My old Konica Minolta camera with macro setting on the windowsill in bright daylight so far is topping the list of my photo options. The above is a digital microscope shot - great to use for close up examination but I find very cumbersome to get lighting and focus right for photos. |

Tomorrow is yet another day, hoping for another "big sky" Alberta bright day and good photo opportunities....
Amazing amount of variations not to overlook the expertise and energy that you personally have invested into the study. It's truly inspiring.

Neither had I. I noticed it listed on ebay by a well known forum contributor/ Pacific coast dealer at a very reasonable price. Most of 50c collection was handed down from my father and I originally decided to fill some gaps including wide and narrow dates. Then what I thought to be one or another wasn't necessarily so and my accumulation increased. I find that King George VI 50c sell for a very reasonable price on ebay and virtually each one is like surprise package as to variety especially if the photo is not clear. 50c variety pieces are great fun to collect in my opinion, hugely underrated.... |

This is a full photo of the hoof through 4 die crack. There's faint traces of the die crack through to the tail, the back part of the leg is poorly formed and I notice another die crack over the "A" in Canada.  This is a different one. The tool marks under the last "4" are very evident, similar to the 2nd example above except the "9" has a horizontal gouge (you'll likely notice learning proper numismatic terminology is also on my future "to do" list;-)  |

Hope this is okay with thedollarman to recycle this thread once again because it has good information regarding 1944 varieties.
Anyone, feel free to post a pic and I also have some to add, working on getting some good photos.

here ya go Rob..only took me a couple years to get you that picture..not bad eh?  side note to all you half dollar variety lovers-stay tuned to my upcoming posts to see a 1940 Cud and 2 1943 halves with almost split dies..   Feel free to call me Will.

Thedollarman, I think we may have a matched set. Can you tell if there's a diecrack from the Unicorns tail to the rim? This is a very narrow date, the 4 and 4 are almost touching. There's a fairly large blob ( Cud) connecting the hoof and the 4. My apologies, my photo is revealing a bit of glare. Zoell LP445n  ****** SHAFTA9a, looking forward to your filled '4'. I notice from the listing compiled by pginrh that there's more than one plugged variety. |

You're welcome papeldog. Over the next couple weeks I plan to sift through the majority of the King George VI years, thread by thread, highlighting some of the more interesting. At the beginning I found reference photos to be very helpful when I first began my attempt to classify 50c, so I hope someone else might as well. That was before I took up the kind offer from pginrh to receive a copy of his very indepth Study of varieties. Since then, I have stepped far deeper into variety collecting than I would have ever believed possible. It is utterly fascinating and so much to learn. Anyone else having any to share, please join along. If you'd to know a specific Zoell variety, I'm sure someone including pg our resident expert will help you out. |
