I'm slpit pretty evenly on three types of coins: Franklin half dollars, Buffalo nickles, and Indian Head cents. For a new collector on a budget, wich series should I pick and why? Thank you!

You're on a roll with halves now. Franklins should be easy to put a nice set together.
Plus I love big silver coins

Do you have a time frame you want to complete it in? Do you have a grade for the coins you would like to stick with for the set?

Indians get very expensive, so I'm gonna say Franklin halves, they're very fun to collect.

I am going my own way. Essentially, I am a type collector.

For U.S. coins, I am doing a gold denomination set, within each denomination my favorite type.
My next target is an Indian head half eagle.

(A sub collection, which is part of my World coin collection)

Flip a coin, heads is one choice, tails is the second choice and if perchance it lands on the edge it is the third choice.

It is your collection, you are the one paying for it and looking at it if you cannot decide what you want then do not do anything until you can make up YOUR own mind. Asking what to collect next or conducting a poll on any forum will get you nowhere as each member has their own preferences for their coin collections so the point of this thread is useless to help you figure out what to do.

I prefer type coin collecting in AU and better condition and do not give a hoot about what anyone else thinks about what types of coins I collect. Some people are content with collecting lower graded coins or higher graded coins and that is quite okay since coin collecting is a very personal choice and I do not judge other collectors by the types/grades of coins they collect. You collect what makes YOU happy.

On that list, the Franklin half dollars. Relatively quick and easy.

Of course I would be remiss if I did not recommend my beloved Eisenhower dollar.

I agree with gyrene on this one, but its obvious you cant afford key dates or even semi keys right now so the obvious thing in your budget is Franklin halves. Atleast that set you will actually "complete"

I would say Indian Head cents because you won't need to buy different size flips.

I'm a cent enthusiast, so my choice would be IHC's.If I was in your shoes, I would collect IHC's while upgrading & finding those key wheats.

Do you have any other sets going or completed?
When silver prices were so high in the recent past, I worked on and
completed a set of Jeffersons. I started out merely liking the Jeffs, but
quickly fell in love. It can be an easy set in most respects, but can be
challenging at times to put together a set with lots of eye appeal.

For this case, and using the choices that are given, I am voting for the
Buffalo nickels... However, I would do the nickels AND the Franklins. The
reason being that the Franklin is far from a rare coin, and even in unc
condition, almost all dates are tied to the price of silver, more than the
actual collector value of the coin. So, when silver prices are up, you can
build your Buffalo collection and avoid overpaying for the common silver
halves. When silver prices are down, splurge and stock up on nice halves.
The Franklin set is so short too, that doing it this way, you can still
build your set relatively quick. Just remember that silver has ranged from
$5 to nearly $50 an ounce in only the last 15 years, and historically has
followed this pattern many times over and over in the past. So you will have
to be the one to make the "call" as to when you are comfortable buying up
silver coins to fill your set, and when the price goes up to the point where
you build your Buffalo set. IMO, doing it this way is the "smart way" and
can stretch both your budget and enjoyment to the maximum returns. Make sense?

Ratio's take is great. Working on 2 sets at a time is great because there will be times you are stuck on one. You will probably FOCUS on one more than the other, but you may go 6 months or more without finding something that fits your needs.

Buffalos are iconic and I think everyone needs a buffalo herd. There are a half dozen key dates and a couple of coins that will be a couple hundred dollars each. Because of that, it is a great learning set because you make decisions about the uniform appearance of your set. Are you happy with an MS 1937 and a G-6 1913-D Ty II?

I love Franklins. They do have silver. They are CHEAP right now. If you do Franklins, please fight the urge to pick up circulated hole fillers or picking things out of the dealers' melt bucket. Assemble an uncirculated set, even if you have to settle for AU in some of the S-mints.

I hope you eventually assemble all the sets you listed in your question.

I recommend Franklin halves. This series will not be hard on your budget. I HAVE to also suggest Eisenhower dollars. Fun. Fun. Fun.

I could jump on board with most everyone and say Franklin halves.

However, because I'm bias to nickels, I would go with the Buffaloes.
Granted there are some key dates that aren't the cheapest. So as an alternative you could collect a very nice year set.
A complete year set in VF condition (full horn) is very doable.
