Thursday night my wife and I went through the Houston Beltway toll plaza with my wife's new car. Since we haven't received the Easy Tag (that allows you to transit without stopping at the Toll Plaza), we had to fork over the $1.75. I gave the toll taker 2 $1 bills.

When I looked at my change she gave me later I was very pleasantly surprised with this lovely lady!!

Cool...

1979 SBA was the first really interesting coin I received when I first started harassing bank tellers for "weird" coins.

Nice!

I was just comparing an SBA with a quarter yesterday and was wondering why anyone ever thought they were a good idea...

Yep. We used to call them Carter's Quarters.

My grandaunt (whom I call "other grandma" because she is my grandma's sister, and is more like a grandma to me than a grandaunt) has told me a few times as a kid, about getting SBAs as quarters, and making 75 cents off the deal. I still can not believe that the U.S. designed such a flawed design dollar coin, that was so close in looks and feel to the quarter. I'll bet the SBA could have worked if it had a smooth edge, like the penny or nickel, or if it were a different shape than round, or if the coin had a hole in it. or if it were still reeded edged, but golden, like the current dollar coin. Ah well...

Should had made it not round haha. I have a complete set besides varieties in flips. The only reason I like them is I see it has a mini-extension of Ike's.

Awesome... a real-world illustration of one of the major reasons the coin was a failure. Great story!

Indeed, the similarity to the quarter was the coin's ultimate downfall. I can't complain about a refund, though. :-)

(Well... $200 would have been nicer...)
