Got this for $19 in a bargain bin. Yay or nay? (Sorry for bad picture quality, photography with an iPad is hard.)

Personally I give it a nay. I've never found colorized coins attractive.

I think it's ugly but with a little acetone/solvent it can be made into a nice bullion ASE. For $19 it qualifies as an ok buy.

A bit gimmiky, it would still sell anyway. However, it is still only a bullion coin that should be considered for it's silver value only.
The colorizing would have been done by a commercial pad printing press.

I think you did great. I am not much for colorized coins, but new collectors seem to like them. The Weinman design is beautiful and until the 2013 EU ASE, I think that half the people that collected them, didn't realize the details of the design. Painted coins, while not enhancing the value, enhance the details of the design that you may have never noticed.

The bottom line is, you got a nice display version of a 2001 ASE that is worth at least the current $16.22 melt value and/or APMEX's $31.47 bullion value for $19.

Worst comes to worst, it would make an interesting pocket peice, watching how the color wears.

Not bad at all. You basically paid for a bullion piece for (at present) a little more than $2.25 over spot.

You picked it up for a great price. I gave $23 for a 2015 ASE earlier this week, a tad pricey... But I got to cherry pick my coin out of a new roll so I think you did great @ $19.

Once you remove the coloring with acetone, I'll bet there is a good looking ASE under there.

Don't abuse that coin. Acetone will take the color right off.
Been there, done that. As long as you don't let it get marked
up, it won't have a mark on it when you take the color off.

One of the ASEs that I cherry picked as nice enough to go into
my Dansco was colorized in a previous life. It lived for years
in a capsule, totally protected, and when I took the color off,
I found a totally gorgeous coin. I felt a bit funny about putting
it in my album at first, but looking at it just confirmed it belonged.

I've had a few of these, and got rid of them, basically from the local shop owners that I go to (2 in a very large city, the rest are scumbags) they basically said that turns them in to a generic basically. No lie, I would love to tell which antique store has one of these things right by my house, for no joke, $90... I looked at it at least 5 times before I realized I was not on a candid camera show. I just moved back to my home town after military and stuff, and there's an antique outlet right by my house, and one has just about everything, including this coin for $90! If I liked the store I'd go in and take a picture of it to prove it... lol, because I sure couldn't believe it.

But they end up here.

After two or three weeks the paint comes off.

I had one of these a couple of years ago. It's not paint, even. It's a decal, like the ones for model airplanes. I dipped it in acetone, and rubbed it between my fingers. The decal peeled right off without scratching the silver.
