My cat, Hobbes, passed away last week after a slow but steady decline. I'd had him for 15 years, longer than I've known my wife, and he was my constant companion (climbing on my lap as I worked on the computer, lying beside me when I sat on the couch watching TV, etc.). Really hard to see him go, even though it was not a surprise. Fortunately, he passed peacefully in his sleep and I didn't have to bring him to the vet to put him down.

Anyway, the day he died I decided to cheer myself up and went to ebay to look for one of the coins on my "short list." I'm working on a type set of proof coins and this is the one that I picked out:

Sad-Story-And-A-New-Mercury-Dime Sad-Story-And-A-New-Mercury-Dime

I'm sure I paid too much for it at $345, but I really wasn't in the mood to go bargain hunting. I just wanted something to make the pain go away a bit. No, the coin won't snuggle in my lap and will give me zero love and affection, but it does make me feel better and I will think of Hobbes whenever I look at it.

Here are some pictures of Hobbes from when I first got him 15 years ago:

He was a very long cat and weight 23 pounds when I got him as an adult. Very gentle, very affectionate, loved having his belly rubbed for hours at a time. Honestly, the best cat I've ever owned (and I grew up in a household full of them). Right now, I don't want another cat -- I just really want Hobbes back. But I take some comfort in my memories of him and the knowledge that he lived a long, happy life receiving and giving love.

My sincere condolences, barryg! It's a beautiful dime but not quite the same as Hobbes. I lost one of my cats, Womble, last year - he was 16.

condolences Barry. Beautiful looking cat.

The coin, not nearly as fulfilling as the companionship of Hobbes (Am I too bold to ask if Calvin was your influence) but a nice p/u. You only "paid too much" if you truly think so but if the coin fills a spot in the type set than money does not really matter. Love the flow lines on that example, a real stand out sir.

My condolences. I know what it is like to lose a cat, especially one that has been a companion for so long.

Good to see that you did something numismatic in his memory.

My last cat I never really knew what happen to her and never saw her again, she was 10 or 11 I believe so at least yours passed away in your house and in your possession. From what iv seen as a coin collector that dime should become sentimental to you I think, its very nice.

Yes, indeed! Huge fan of Calvin and Hobbes and what else would I call a 23-lb orange tabby cat?

My condolences to you on the loss of Hobbes. Me and my cat Monk are CCF companions but he doesn't type so I don't give him any credit.

RIP Hobbes. I have an 18-year old black cat named Clyde. I understand the importance of an old friend and hope you'll find another when the time is right.
Rest in Peace

It sounds like Hobbes had a good life with you.

I hope the pain of the loss subsides. God bless.

I'm sorry to hear about Hobbes. My cat died at 18, and she always slept with me.

My condolences Barry, loosing a pet is never easy. I lost several cats the past year. Still have a bunch running around though. My main companion is sitting next to me as I type this.

I'm on my 6th cat, and she's getting up there in age.

I can relate. When the time is right, a kitten is great medicine.

The Isle of Man has been making this series since 1988. I think the 2015 is out now. Would make a good memory.

Barry I'm sorry to hear about Hobbes. A long time ago someone dropped off a young cat in front of my house. We live out in the country and people think we need more cats. We took her in - starving, pregnant and abused. We think abused because she was always very cautious and didn't trust anyone including those who grew to love her.

We had a great run but in the end she grew so weak that I had to carry her up and down the stairs. When I realized that she was suffering and in pain we went to the vet and she put Cleo to sleep. I still remember my tears as she left us.

I keep a reminder in my google calendar of the day she passed - February 12, 2007.

I'm so sorry for your loss, pets are much more than just animals, I learned the hard way. I grew up without pets, but my wife wanted dogs 16 years ago, since then I've had to put two down, but I've replaced with two more. I'd give anything for mine to of passed in their sleep, heck I hope I pass in my sleep. Oh, and a nice addition to your collection.
Regards,
Ron
