This is why ebay is racing to the crash and burn finish line. They don't care what is sold as long as they get the fees.

Actually, there's nothing wrong with selling fakes like this. Every coin collector in Australia knows that no penny was issued in 1937. Many people like to have coins like this as space fillers or novelty items. Some 1930 space fillers have sold for quite large sums of money, as it happens (depending on how realistic they look).

I don't see anything wrong with this add , he quite clearly states its a novelty and that is slightly thinner , He even tells them they were never made in that year.
I think its a fair and honest add. Just my opinion of course. My only problem is what happens when others get them and what they will attempt to do with them.

"swindeler" is a very harsh term - I see nothing wrong with the listing.

I also see nothing wrong with that listing. He makes it very clear what you are bidding on.

Quote: Australia never made 1937 pennies however here it is. This coin has been produced as a very novel coin. It is slightly thinner than a standard penny and features king George the 6th on the back. Good enough for me. Not sure if fantasy coins need to have "COPY" on them If it's the same size as a genuine penny then IMO, it should.

Interestingly, it seems to be only Australian collectors who want 'fakes' for rare or nonexistent years. I haven't found any evidence that, for example, you can buy a 'fake' 1933 British penny. There are also very rare years for Irish coins, years when I think only a handful were struck, but I've never seen substitutes offered. I wonder what this says about Aussie collectors! I'm surprised the Perth Mint hasn't attempted to cater for the market by producing a replica 1930 penny. It would simply need a mintmark or some other identifying touch to ensure that it could not be mistaken for a real one. But it would make a lot of collectors happy.

Jimjam I think it has a lot more to do with our laws than it does collectors, Its not against the law to make fakes copies or replicas here as long as it is not exactly the same as the original and in most cases its the weight. As long as your not trying to pass it off as an original its not deemed fraud or fraudulent. (must have been a crook with some 1930 fakes who made that law LOL.) Maybe it should have to carry the word "copy" on it as it does in some other countries, But I don't make the laws.

HMMM how about this one from the same seller. Regardless of how the listing is worded something like this without "Copy" on it is just asking for problems down the track. Why go to the trouble of making the coin look "Circulated" if it is intended solely as a "Fantasy" piece. The same thing happened a while back and now we are inundated by fake 1930 and 1925 pennys . I'm with Shane on this one, However the listing is worded the coins are inappropriate and must be marked clearly with the word COPY oops forgot to add the link http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1937-Aus...221692192300

Yes trout I hear you BUT this coin is as you have all taught me very easy to spot , that date is a mess nothing like what it should be infact the entire coin appears to be second grade. The problem will also be then black market coins once its made law to have a distinguishing mark on them like the word "copy" the black market coins will become very difficult for those looking to know its a fake replica come fantasy coin as they will just assume its real because fakes must be described as such. I don't think it will ever stop now its to late and I bet they have already made thousands of them. Good old china clone ya mother for a yen.

I think they make them look circulated so they'll fit into a Dansco album and not stick out like a sore thumb alongside the others.
I don't think the Chinese trade in fake coins can be as bad as some people make out because we haven't as yet seen any fake 1933 British pennies or 1938 Irish pennies (2 only known) being offered for sale.
