I am brand new to collecting dimes. Are all 1965 - 1967 dimes SMS? If not, how can you tell the difference? Are than any key dates to watch out for other than pre 1965?

No. 1965-1967 dimes struck for circulation are what is referred to as business strikes. They were saved in rolls and bags over the years and it is not difficult to buy them. The SMS coins were "not quite proofs" made for collectors. These coins, in my opinion, will have less long term benefit than finding superior quality business strikes from 1965 to 1967.

This article that Hubert Walker and I wrote in 2012, will likely shine some light on the series for you. I recommend that you give it a look: http://www.coinweek.com/education/c...sevelt-dime/

SMS cameos are interesting coins- and much more prevalent than many people think. MS67FT clad business strikes from these dates are much scarcer.

Coins that the services will grade cameo are very few and far between butit's true that many of the SMS coins have at least lightly cameo. A full quarter of something like '67 quarters have at least a light cameo but it's much lower for '65 and '66 issues and for cents of all dates. Many of these lightly cameo'ed coins are really quite stunning but they have been selectively removed from sets over the years making them seem far scarcer than they are.

But heavy cameo coins with even cameo on both sides and with basined surfaces and cameo cents are very elusive.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
