Have any of you used this site: http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis.jspIt has all of the Krause books online or so it says. Do this have all of the same things the books have? If I use this is there any reason to go out and buy the books?

It ain't all free though. "Subscribe to this guide: Monthly ($9.95) Yearly ($59.95) " That's just for one book. I'd rather have the hard copy in front of me for reference. I'm already at my computer Way too much as it is

The subscription is optional though. The sample guide is free. How much are the hard copies anyway?

I use NumisMaster (the free bits, anyway) as one of my regular tools for looking up and ID coins; it's a bit unwieldy to use, and you can't put a link here in the forum to a coin you find there.
Personally, I prefer to pay just once for a book I can keep, rather than a monthly/yearly subscription for a webpage - even though I have to pay far-side-of-the-planet postage for a phonebook-sized catalogue.

I bought an older edition of the Krause books as you can usually find them on alibiris.com or abebeooks.com for much less than new. It's not like they are very accurate for the latest listings anyway. I use numismaster to search for coins when my book isn't within reach, and sometimes when I am just looking to identify a coin. The free search won't give you mintage numbers or values, but since you can probably find the mintage number elsewhere for free, and the values aren't always accurate, I can get pretty much all the info I need from numismaster.

Hi, Numismaster.com does not have the 1601-1700 and the 1701-1800 versions online yet. The free listings are o.k. but lack alot of information such as mintages and values. I also find the free version to be painfully slow and the same is reported for the paid version. This is not something Krause has discussed working on. The online version is supposed to have more updated information than the book version but that will depend when they update it. The full, paid for version is supposed to consist of The Standard Catalog of World Coins 1801-1900, 1901-2000, 2001-to date, North American Coins, Unusual World Coins and 1701-1800 is supposed to be coming soon. A yearly subscription will cost $149.95 American. If you were to purchase each of those catalogs separately and new, a conservative estimate would be $235.00 American, easily. I myself prefer the books. I only buy a new one of each every five years or so. The prices in the catalogs are not guaranteed or Gospel, they are just guides. The real value would be determined by public demand which you would have to check from a number of different sources.

You would be incorrect. I have no problems finding coins from the 1600s and 1700s in Numismaster. Just a simple search under Austria (for example) turns up tons of coins in the 1600s, and even a silver 4 Thaler coin from 1590. I'm not doing anything special to find these either. I also don't find the site to be slow at all. An Example is Austria KM#12 1 Pfennig (1601-1617): quote: Basic Coin Information KM# 12 Denomination Pfennig Country Austria Government Empire Ruler Ferdinand II Coinage Type Standard Coinage Mint Klagenfurt Composition Silver Description Obverse Divided arms with date above in diamond Notes Uniface. Varieties exist. Local issue for Archduke Ferdinand. Prev. KM#985.

The speed of the site is a matter of opinion I guess. I still maintain that it is slow. The information given about the catalogs contained within Numismaster.com was taken off their site, Numismaster.com, from the page "Available Price Guides."I cannot help it if there information about themselves is incorrect.

Ahhh, the Price Guides for those coins may not be up, but other information about the coins is. And yes, speed of the site is a matter of opinion. Let's just say I don't find it any faster or any slower than any other sites that I visit and leave it at that.

I like the Krause paper catalogs. I have thirteen of them sitting on my desk at the moment. They were the first catalogs I used when I started collecting coins and they are the first ones I recommend to a person just starting out as well as to a seasoned veteran. Speed issues aside, here is something I thought of last night that bothers me about their online site. If they do not have the correct information posted on their own site about what catalogs they offer for Numismaster.com, how accurate is the information within going to be?
