Hi there, found 1983 Lincoln Cent and would like to hear from you all as far as "is it a DDR?" Hope the pics are good enough, you can see the side of the memorial pillar doubling, along with some letters in "one cent". That doubling doesn't look mechanical in my opinion. Thanks for your time.

Looks like MD to me,your pic's are fine. 1 pic of the coin as a whole close up is helpful.

What is MD, Mint damage? no way, the coin has no damage. Do I have to start new topic to send close up of coin? I'mnew at this forum stuff, and this site isn't the easiest thing to navigate thru. Thanks Jean

MD stands for Machine Damage, indicating that it is not a DDR and has little value other than $0.01. Machine damadge occurs when the coin shifts during striking, leaving a flat, shelf like appearance. I belive coop has a great picture for this... Here it is:

See how the "doubling" is flatter and squared off? You can see it is not on the same level or height as the actual devices. The coin is technically damaged by that. MD.

Is there a similar picture that demonstrates actual doubling so we can compare to MD?

MD refers to Machine Doubling. The die is a normal die but during the strike the die moved and distorted the shape of the devices struck. I've changed over from saying Machine Doubling and us machine damaged. That is because nothing is actually damaged on the devices, but rather damaged. I'm probably the only one doing this, but it helps new ones to see that it is not doubling, but a reduction in the overall size of the devices.
