Here is a 1964 quarter that I found in my pile of stuff. I am hoping that some of the experts here will look it over and give their opinion.

Forgot to add: I have just got a new Celestron Digital Microscope and must say I am not very pleased with the performance of this tool. It is a pain to focus and I just cannot get the close-ups I was expecting. The pictures of the quarter are the best I can get at this point. Maybe someone out there knows some ways to tweak these babies for REAL close-ups.

Honestly those are far better than most close-up coin pics posted. Fladude. Certainly better than what I can do. And

I'm speculating but I think a problem with a microscope is the focus is SO very fine when things are magnified like that. What's in focus will be out of focus 2mm on either side of the focal point. I think that's why some high-res coin photos are composites of layered photographs.

Again, I know next to nothing about photographing coins so take what I just said with a grain of salt and makes sure to visit the coin photography section of this forum.

I see MD,which is short for Machine Double or Doubling. Not a Doubled Die.

Nice you found a 1964 Silver Coin/90% Silver. MD's tend to shift from one side of the coin to the other side. This is in part to the jump and skip of the die as the coin gets struck. Nice pile of stuff to find a Silver coin.

Cooper is a member here and is great with pics, sure he will help u with pics if you asked him. Your pics as is are good for me to see what you ask about.

It is MD. I have a Celestron 44302 and it gets good close-ups but the lighting is really bad. I had to block off all but one LED and and cover that LED with a filter.

It is machine damaged on the devices while it was struck.

Thanks to all for the input. Now that I know the coin is not a double die, I will cancel my plans for an early retirement. JOHN1 - I determined quickly that the LED lighting on the Celestron had to go. I removed them completely and use a different side lighting setup.

Jayman931, yes, same problem with the Celestron. With 6 LEDs shining directly down on an uncirculated coin would wash the picture out and make you blind. It was an easy fix on the Celestron. The LEDs are mounted on a printed wafer board. They are powered through the two long bolts that hold the unit together. 1, pull off the clear plastic gizmo on the end. 2, Remove the two tiny nuts holding the LED wafer. The wafer will come right out, no wiring involved. 3, Re-assemble and stupid lighting problem solved.
